Preferred paint for fruit tree sunburn protection?

The books all say use diluted flat white latex paint for painting citrus tree trunks to protect them from sunscald. But there are two kinds of latex paint, vinyl and acrylic. A long time ago I seem to remember reading one should use the cheaper vinyl, I'm guessing because the paint film isn't as tough. Would it be OK to use acrylic if thats all I have on hand, or should I go out and buy vinyl? Maybe it doesn't matter as long as it's water based? Could one use enamel or primer instead or would that keep the bark from breathing, if it even breathes?

I also read fruit trees should be planted with the graft union facing north to protect it from sunburn, anyone ever hear of this? I usually plant mine in the orientation that looks the best.
