Evergreen tomatoes

If you pick green tomatoes, will they ever ripen inside? Or are they then green forever? One green tomato got knocked off the plant, so it's sitting on my counter being green (which is apparently quite easy for a tomato). I've another hundred or so green tomatoes in all sizes on my plants. If I pick them just ahead of frost, will they ever ripen up and turn red? They're living on borrowed time as it is.

And if I put all my tomato containers on my back porch close to the house and cover them with row cover, will that give them another week or two to finally ripen up? They won't get any sun there, though.
