Purple velvet/passion Vine

My Gynura aurantiaca flowered and seeded. The seeds look similar to dandelion seeds, with the white feather like attatchment. Will these seeds sprout? I think I read somewhere that they don't sprout, and someone else said they tried sprouting them but they never did. Does anyone know for sure?

I have also tried sprouting the seeds to no avail, and according to Dave's Garden, the seeds are sterile, or if they do sprout, the plants won't come true from seed. But, it does seem kind of pointless to waste the time and energy when PPPs cuttings are so easy to root in water.

Elf, I agree..it's a nice experiment of course, but PP's are sold at HD for something like 3.49 in 4" pots..I'd like the variegated..that'd be worth rooting or sowing, but if they don't come true to seed, there's no sense wasting time/soils/energy..

Bird, did the flowers have a well stinky odor? LOL..when I worked at HD in the gh, we got in a bunch of PP's in bud. As time went by the buds opened..I smelled something sour..Tried detecting the source, and sure enough it was flowers from PP. Did you notice an odor? Toni

I would love to have either cuttings or preferably a rooted start of any variegated version of the Gynura, Velvet or Purple Passion plant!! I noticed when i take it outside on feeding day (its in coco liner basket) & leave it out all day to drain, in full sun it gets droopy. I left it in the shade which turns to full sun in the late afternoon early eve hours. I could handle it smelling like a marigold. I'll leave the flowers from now on. I don't know about pollination as i just got the plant a couple months back, but i am wondering if it will root in water like the Wandering Jew does. A lady had one of the PVV in her office hanging smack infront of a east window & her plant was kept trimmed up shorter & was total velvety, No green what so ever & was actually a bright fuschia color rather than like mine who is darker. i think its the same plant, i don't know of any other thats velvety & purple or fuschia colored. Any one have pics to share of their PVV thats got bold coloring? Enjoy your nite! Tonia

Corkystem passion vine grow with purple passion vine?

I let mine intertwine with no problems. The butterflies can use the nectar of the others, and then lay their eggs on the corkystem. Zebra Longwings prefer the corkystem in shade, so leaving them with the other vines could help pull those butterflies in too.

Incense is not self-fertile, and most clones of it are not very fertile at all. I hand pollinated mine this past year about 60 times! with incarnata pollen, without any luck. It did set one small fruit from a flower that I did not hand pollinate, but it did not set until almost all of my wild incarnatas had stopped flowering around Labor Day. Not sure where the pollen came from. I cut off the developing fruit with about a foot of stem when cold weather set in and kept it in water indoors until my patience ran out a couple of weeks ago. I cut it open and found 5 mature seeds and several immature seeds. All of the commonly available red passionflowers are very likely to NOT be self-fertile, but all should produce edible fruit when cross-pollinated with suitable pollen. ~kiwinut

There were only a total of 3 flowers, so not enough to produce a marked scent and I didn't put my nose up to them to smell them.

I guess you'd have to put your nose up to the plant to smell it's 'fragrance.' LOL..
