Sorry to tell you this, but it may be too late. I think the black leaves are rotting. This is a plant that should be in plastic, not clay to help conserve the water; but should be allowed to dry out btwn waterings. I suspect you've overwatered it. Also, it's not such a fan of direct sun, I think it'd prefer more bright but indirect light, not direct sun. I'm not trying to be mean, but don't know why you felt the need to change the mix (I don't know what indoor/outdoor soil is) or the type of pot, when it seems you folks were too new at this to know what/why you were doing this. Cut all the black stuff off & pls., STOP WATERING FOR at least 7 days & let the plant try to recover. If it starts to smell bad, I'd say you're too late. Perhaps do some reading up on general houseplant care BEFORE buying & or repotting other plants. Also FYI, it's generally customary here to start a new thread when it's a different question. Hers was abt the babies, yours is for general help. I hope the plant makes it!

I know that mine does not like tap water. She almost died on me!! When I started using distilled or filtered water, she really picked up. I wait till the soil is dry before watering/feeding her. Almost to the point to where she is wilting some, but not a lot. She is in the 5-1-1 mix. I am by no means a professional on this~~ Just telling you my experiences. :) Marjie

Pots-Alot: Thanks. I shall do as you say. I just didn't want to add water too soon or add more water than necessary to an already overwatered system. Purpleinopp: Yeah, I figured there was too much water. I didn't water very often and there was good drainage (I thought), but maybe the soil was really retaining the water? That's why I repotted into cactus soil and chose a terracotta pot so water could drain out the bottom and evaporate through the pot. Thanks for confirming though. Now I know I'm finally on the right track.

I know many others have great success with phals in CHC, but I did not. My phals are in a part shade GH in the summer and indoors under lights in the winter. The CHC mix I used (CHC, diatomite and charcoal) didn't keep the roots moist enough in the winter under lights. Also, many of the pots got a strange fungus. Some of you old timers may remember the pic I posted maybe 5 years ago--the mix looked like moldy fruitcake. I put a layer of styrofoam peanuts in the bottom of the pot and use a mix of sphag and pea-size perlite, with diatomite sprinked over the top. I don't know whether the diatomite helps, but since i already had it in the mix, i just clean it with physan and reuse it each time i repot. I never have root rot (plants need water every 1-2 weeks, dependig on size of pot), and my phals do very well. All of them bloom every year, some with 2 spikes.
