Here's a pix of the stumps and the description is

doors and windows painted on, then rooftop gardens added containng driftwood and a ceramic chimney. Plus a stone pathway and a garden gnome that lights up at night.

Also someone did a trellis out of an old wrought iron bakers rack they found that was missing the shelves. I didn't get pix of it. But pretty with vines growing up and over top and then hanging basket from the cross bars along the back side.

Oh..I thought it was those white plastic buckets at first.

I've seen a picture on here once a long time ago...they cut the stump at angles on top to look like a roof then nail on shingles...and painted the door. I think they removed the bark where the door was painted or the tree had a "scar" there...and the rest of the tree had bark on it.

Somewhere I saved the pic...because I thought maybe someday............

Karen, thanks for posting this. I get Birds & Blooms, and hadn't looked at it yet. When I first saw it, I thought it was buckets, too, Patti. I can't figure out what the rim at the top is. Bet someone here can!

I remember that stump with the shingled roof!! I have the perfect stump and the shingles. Think it has been about 3 yrs I've been waiting for DH to cut the angle for the roof. Our old chain saw just won't do it.

Also on that page, along with the stump and bakers rack trellis, is a window hanging from a lilac bush with the words, "one discovers many things when looking through a window" stenciled white in all capitol letters.

Karen, check out the stump on page 60. heehee just saw it. Two narrow stumps about 7ft tall, right next to each other, with a pair of boots upside down on the top! It says, "looks like a really big guy fell head-first and got stuck"

Thanks sunny-gw...one never knows until the bracts start to develop if a tree is tagged correctly. I've a few bougainvillea bonsai. One tagged the wrong color...so I was holding my breath hoping this one showed true form and double blooms. Since they are called paper flowers...I tucked this away in the greenhouse last night with the storm about to roll through. I don't want to lose those blooms until they are at the final peak of their showing. These are to stay longer on the tree than typical bracts. So that's also exciting.

Although I am a true fragrant rosarian (I can say that now as I thought we all call ourselves gardeners, but we are not Master Gardeners, so we can call ourselves rosarians, though we are not consultant rosarians) I think I have that straight now, nothing to do with what I was going to say, anyway, back to The Fairy Rose. I have six and would never do without this beauty. I love it. It reminds me of Cherry Blossom, but out of season. It makes amazing back drops in bouguets yet, makes a bouquet all by itself. I decorated an arch with it at my friends daughter's wedding, we had so much of it, it was beautiful. Everyone should have the Fairy in their lives! :) Pauline

Roselee, Didn't want to hijack your thread into a discussion on glyphosate, so that linked article was sort of an oblique confirmation of your doubt that "glyphosate disappears from the soil very quickly." In fact, in Monsanto's own words: "...the tight binding of glyphosate to agricultural soils effectively prevents significant root uptake by nearby plants." This is what enables that nice ability of almost immediately replanting a treated area. Residual/cumulative glyphosate is not likely to be an issue for most home gardeners, but the research and debate in the agricultural space is moving me to become a bit more conservative in its use. The fact that non-targeted plants can be damaged when their roots are intermingled with targeted plants in small containers or the glyphosate becomes mobile in hydroponics is pretty well accepted. But it's reasonably argued that these are not representative of most yard or field growing environments. The exception is the warning shouted on the Roundup usage sheets about what several of us have advised: PRECAUTIONS, RESTRICTIONS: DO NOT MAKE CUT STUMP APPLICATIONS WHEN THE ROOTS OF ADJACENT DESIRABLE TREES MAY BE GRAFTED TO THE ROOTS OF THE CUT STUMP. INJURY RESULTING FROM ROOT GRAFTING MAY OCCUR IN ADJACENT TREES.... Adjacent trees having a similar age, height and spacing may signal shared roots. Whether grafted or shared, injury is likely to occur to non-treated stems/trees when one or more trees sharing common roots are treated. So, might not use it on a stump in a grove of similar aged oaks, but not likely to be an issue in your situation. Planting a new tree within 3 or 4 feet of the stump shouldn't be a problem as our own experience has shown... well, other than digging the hole through the roots of the old tree.

Before you pay $35 plus a gal and get it home and you not like it..why not see if BM sells the jar of sample paint in your chosen color? $4 for a sample if it is available could save you not only money but a lot of frustration and stress. We have learned to do that first. Putting the small cardboard sample chart on the wall doesn't do it for me so my very clever former Duron paint mgr. suggest we buy white poster board and buy sample or qt. size and paint that poster board the chosen color and use the paint tape to hang it on your wall where you can look at it for a few days before definately deciding if it is the right color you want to live with for a few years. That blue paint tape will not damage your wall or leave the residue that scotch tape will do. I came upon a website by accident on yesterday and although it was not on BM website, it showed a list of the most used BM paint colors and what rooms they were used in. I bookmarked it for future reference. There are other paint companies that are selling the sample paints, which is a super idea in my opinion. Less costly trial and error method!

Wish it was my "imagination" that came up with this, Hazie.
Some other creative lady who's daughter can paint well. I don't even have a stump to do this on, but if I find one...LOL.
I hope some of you do it tho and share photos of your fairy stumps.

That is so great! I simply love it! I've got a beautiful stump....it rode shotgun in the back seat from my daughters in Ohio to ours in Iowa. I can't imagine what other motorist thought! hehehehe All I have to do is wait for spring and some free time to turn it into a house....for gnomes instead of fairies. I've other ideas for a fairy house..but as usual I haven't had a chance to get to it. An 87 year old mil, and the guardianship of two grandchildren take up a great deal of time!

I thought it was a white plastic bucket too. Very cute idea, love it. It looks like they "distress painted" the stump an off-white color. The doors and windows are just too cute.

Has anyone figured out what that ridge is on the roof? After looking at it over and over, I am sure that is what is holding the soil..just can't figure out what could be used.

Hmm...just looked out back and there sits an ole faded huge plastic, terra cotta look, planter. The top rim looks like it might fit my stump! Now...to wait for the inch of ice on it to melt!!

Any other ideas?
