the reason named varieties won't pollinate the same variety is because they are cloned by grafting and all originated form one original tree. Therefore effectively are the same tree. Seeds on the other hand are individual offspring carrying different genetics. So near a 100% chance the seedlings will pollinate each other. The down side: Pests will have access to an easy breeding ground. Furthermore the fruit will rot quickly once it falls to the ground. This will happen at a time deer have plenty of other food options. If you plant turnips you will get the desired effect of winter food for deer after the turnip is frozen in the ground and other food getting thinner. But of course turnips are annual. Watermelons is another. Coyotes love them. Another thing you can do is gather acorns and read up on how to store them for the winter, then go around planting them in fence rows or whatever. Oaks grow slow but 50 years after you die wildlife will be eating from your big beautiful trees. Also, you can plant elderberry thickets. those grow from cuttings. google that. If you can't find an Elderberry bush to get clippings from I can send you some next march.

Ooh, that may be hard to figure out where the separate grafts are right now. See if you can find four different kinds of leaves, right now. If you can differentiate the leaves, then you'll find your different grafts. If that fails, well... just trim it back well, then wait until it fruits and see. Not all of the grafts may have survived, and perhaps the rootstock has sent out some shoots, too. (That fruit probably would not be very edible.) Let me know how it goes! Good luck.

You have to admit though that the bradford pear trees are beautiful. With their natural full shape, their early and abundant white blossoms, their red foliage in the fall and their rapid, low maintenance growth. It is no wonder they are so popular. They look like lollipops to me - not my idea of a natural shape. And they are stinky (everyone's smell is different). And they are becoming a pest because they cross-pollinate now with some of the "other" sterile ornamental pears (like Cleveland Select). Look around, you can see flowering young trees in vacant lots and on the edges of natural areas now.

It is very easy. Just go to YouTube and type in cleft graft, bark graft, or whip and tongue and cut some non fruit tree branches for practice then do the real thing. All you need is a box cutter, a roll of black electrical tape, a roll of parafilm order from Amazon or you can substitute parafilm with Saran wrap cut in small strips to wrap it. There you go. Grafting will allow you to have many variety of fruits one one tree if you don't have room for a hundred fruit trees. I got a Red Fuji apple tree with 20 different varieties grafted on it.
