Jade plant looks the same for 2 years.

I got a Jade plant two years ago.

It is smallish- two branches coming from the base, and at the top of each branch a handful of leaves.

In the 2 years I have owned it, it has not grown one iota. It is as if it is stuck in time. I let it live outdoors once summer- nothing.

I repotted it- nothing.

It likes to pretend it is going to finally give up and die but loosing most of it's leaves, then it regrows the leaves and stays the same for another few months.

The only thing it does is drop and regrow leaves. Never more leaves than before, never a new branch, never taller, nada.

It's had full sun, low sun, fertilizer, etc.

What kind of potting mix are you using? How large is the container? And how often do you fertilize?

When I gave my buddy the Jade, I advised him to fertilize regularly during the growing season. He has done so, and this is the result:

Why wait until next spring to do that soil test? Having a good, reliable soil test done now will allow you to make any necessary changes to the soil so it will be ready next spring to grow your plants. In addition to a soil test done by your state universities USDA Cooperative Extension Service use these simple soil tests, 1) Structure. From that soil sample put enough of the rest to make a 4 inch level in a clear 1 quart jar, with a tight fitting lid. Fill that jar with water and replace the lid, tightly. Shake the jar vigorously and then let it stand for 24 hours. Your soil will settle out according to soil particle size and weight. A good loam will have about 1-3/4 inch (about 45%) of sand on the bottom. about 1 inch (about 25%) of silt next, about 1 inch (25%) of clay above that, and about 1/4 inch (about 5%) of organic matter on the top. 2) Drainage. Dig a hole 1 foot square and 1 foot deep and fill that with water. After that water drains away refill the hole with more water and time how long it takes that to drain away. Anything less than 2 hours and your soil drains too quickly and needs more organic matter to slow that drainage down. Anything over 6 hours and the soil drains too slowly and needs lots of organic matter to speed it up. 3) Tilth. Take a handful of your slightly damp soil and squeeze it tightly. When the pressure is released the soil should hold together in that clump, but when poked with a finger that clump should fall apart. 4) Smell. What does your soil smell like? A pleasant, rich earthy odor? Putrid, offensive, repugnant odor? The more organic matter in your soil the more active the soil bacteria will be and the nicer you soil will smell. 5) Life. How many earthworms per shovel full were there? 5 or more indicates a pretty healthy soil. Fewer than 5, according to the Natural Resources Conservation Service, indicates a soil that is not healthy. to look more closely at your soil for what else needs be done. I would never water a Jade every 3-5 days..thats very bad for a Jade and will only induce rot. Especially if your Jade is small, it will tolerate even less. Those that talk about neglecting a Jade are experieced growers of this plant and know what they are talking about. This plant thrives on being neglected. To much water even with a porous soil will still be detrimental to the plant. I think this is an overly broad statement. Watering frequency simply depends on how quickly a soil dries out. I grow my small jade in a mix of equal parts fir bark, Turface, and granite grit. I water it every 3-5 days in winter because it will be bone dry within 5 days. The risk of rot is introduced when a soil holds water for too long. If it dries out in a reasonable amount of time, then there is no risk in watering when dry. Jade's are pretty vigorous plants that continue to grow during cooler months. When I repotted mine recently it was so full of roots that I had to trim half of them back. Dirtshaman's problem does sound like rot, but that is most likely caused by an overly water retentive soil. The problem many people have is that they don't realize how long moisture remains in the lower portion of their pots. A wooden shishkebab skewer poked into the soil for several minutes can be a big help in figuring this out.

Garden Valley Dahlias in Roseburg(no longer in business), Oregon rotated his dahlia crop on his farm each year. The first year he would grow them to the right of his house and the next year grow them to the left of his house. He had lots of room and I believe he planted about them in 600 foot long rows. Another factoid was that he planted them in alphabetical order. His 600 foot rows had few openings to cross over to the next row and if you visited his farm, you did a lot of walking. If you plant dahlias in the same area each year, you should add lots of compost to keep the soil fertile. If you do that and always check for proper pH and have your soil tested periodically they will do fine in the same place.

aw he looks gorgeous. He is in miracle grow potting soil, in a well drained pot. The pot is about 8 inch diameter. He was in a 4 inch pot but was horrible root bound so I put him in a larger pot, and there was about 1.5 inches for me to fill with dirt all around. I hadn't fed him after repotting since the dirt has food in it- but this week I did get some plant food that you add to water and gave him that. My plant doesn't have branches just to long things coming up from a bulbous base. I've raised succulents before, never had this issue. I a thinking of giving up and putting a cactus in the pot.

Hi Angie. How strange!

Jades are semi-slow growers, but you certainly should have seen new growth in 2-years.

You said you repotted. How much space is between rootball and inner container?

If the pot is too small, roots have no room to grow, therefore leaf/branch growth will halt.

On the other hand, 'many will disagree.' If the pot is too large, roots need to grow larger before new leaves form. (4-plus inches between rootball and inner container.)

Jades are sun lovers. South or west windows are perfect. Summer your Jade outdoors, if possible.
If you decide to place outside, start off in a shady spot, then as the days go by, move to a brighter location. If it's placed in direct sun, leaves will burn.

I fertilize succulents with Fish Emulsion. FE is organic and won't burn roots. High in nitrogen.
You can also alternate FE with your usual brand.

When temps are high, 90's-plus, growth halts, but there had to be a chilly period in your area. 'Unless you live on the sun, lol. j/k, the last two years.

Jades need light to grow healthy trunks/leaves. Placing in shade won't help.

the tag said it was some sort of Jade and my MIL thinks it is a jade, too but to me the leaves are kinda thin and not plump like your jades.

Those are dead leaves in the pot. I give him back his dead leaves in case there's any benefit to them (nutrition?)

Sorry, but that is NOT a Jade plant, I am certain of it.

Looks more like an Adenium (Desert Rose). I don't grow these, but if you search at the Cactus & Succulent Forum nearby (see the top of the front page above), likely you can find similar plants shown there.

Also, if you wish to repeat this post there, it's likely you can get help for its care & culture.

Also, pls. remove dead leaves (leaf debris) which only contributes to rot, which I'm SURE you don't want.

I am going to move it outside onto the porch and see if it likes it better out there. I will remove the dead leaves today.

Thanks so much for helping me. Had I not known the correct identity of the plant, I never would have a hope of taking care of it.

After reading about them, tho, it seems I still have the same issue. He was outside all summer long last year and he did not flower or grow.
