But seriously, I have also pulled out some things. My peppers never went anywhere this year. Gone. I reduced 2 zucchini plants to 1 since the family's getting sick of it now anyway. I pulled the last of the cucumbers to make room for cabbage. But I did realize in this first full year I've had the new garden that I simply don't have enough room for all the things I want to grow. So I'm adding a few wine barrels.

It really is a juggle. I hate pulling plants before they're done giving me all they've got. But on the flipside, I don't want to miss an entire fall season because I planted too late.

I'll be curious to know what other people do.

Farms just do a last harvest and till it under and plant new crops.

Plants take a certain amount of time to establish themselves and fruit. If you miss that time you will be running deeper into the next planting season. If you don't plant soon come Spring you will be starting a thread called "Hot season crop planting time?"

I plant the fall stuff right underneath the summer stuff.

Actually, this year, I'm planting my winter stuff in my asparagus bed (a couple years old). The winter stuff can be shaded a bit by the gus ferns that I haven't cut back yet.
I still have tomato plants (if you can call them that this year!), peppers, eggplant, a final flush of zuks and basil.
I usually cut back from about 5 beds to 1 or 2 in the winter and work on composting all winter. I also have a salad box on my deck if it gets just too wet out in the regular garden.

I try to leave some dedicated space for spring and fall crops... that way I don't have a big area sitting empty most of the season, but neither am I pulling out stuff that's still producing. The spring crops bolt way before I'm ready to plant the fall ones in their place.

It also helps that certain areas of my garden get full sun in spring and fall, but more shade in summer, so they're ideal for the cool-weather crops.

Of course, this is in an ideal world, where I don't start twice the tomato seedlings that I could ever fit =)

Peachymomo you are in a zone 9b. If its anything like my zone 9b here are some planting charts for you. When the coldest months of the year have an average daytime temp of 67 and it can still be in the mid 70's to low 80's in early November you have to listen to others with your growing conditions. People that live in other areas of the country just can't relate.

Thisisme, I use those planting calendars. I just transplanted lettuce today but it's gonna be 103 tomorrow!! Shade cloth, mulch and water I guess. I found last year, it only cooled down in mid-late November.

I start the larger plants in a nursery area or in pots and place them around garden plants that are growing. I also do a lot of planting of short season plants and ignore the frost dates If they frost out too bad, if they make it from a late frost whoopee. I will pull tomatoes even if they are producing, to tell the truth when it gets cold the maters lose flavor so I put the fruit in a warm spot to ripen, and into the compost with the plants. It is better to have 27 spinach plants that will over winter than one iffy tomato That will give it up next week. I also have a high tunnel new this year for frost protection

Me too kingkongos. Those little Leeks I planted on the 13th are hardly bigger around than a hair. Looks like shade clothe for another week or two.

Hey Curt, couldn't you plant the spinach under the tomato plants and still have the best of both worlds?????
By the time the spinach germinates the maters will be ready to pull.(I think)

A lot will depend on your micro-climate and Sun exposure. I have had good luck planting Snow Peas in the Fall, and harvesting them through February:

A Southern facing layout, with a protective wall from the North winds really makes a difference. Also, above ground container growing aids in cool weather vegetable production, as the low angle of the Sun warms the container's walls.

My Fall cukes and second Season tomato plantings should keep me in fresh vegetables through the end of the Year, and beyond. Again, a sheltered environment is so important to success.....
