how big will my container citrus trees get?
Comments (4)Hmmm Hi Jeff n Jessa, I have a bunch of dwarf citrus in containers and I am wondering the same thing. Mine have only been in for about a year, so they are still sort of bush like. Except for a Standard Wekiwa tangelo which is about 5 feet high and doesn't appear to have max'd out growing tall. May have to prune it. Anyone know a good rule of thumb? Dwarf size in a container? Standard size in a container? To answer your question #2, you will probably lose some of the orange fruits. 2% of the fruit only last till ripening is what I have heard. My orange container trees (18" across) lose a bunch but keep a bunch also. It is quite sad when you see all of the small round fruits falling off.... Here is a link where you can see my container citrus. Remember, 2-3 year old trees in my containers for only about a year... Comments (17)Hi laura... Man that is a huge bummer! Everyone else..WOW Let me start by saying to laura that you will probably get a much quicker response if you start a new thread right here on the citrus forum. Like ask.."ANTS, WHAT TO DO IN MY CONTAINERS, HELP!!" There is a member here that is unbeleiably smart baout insects and how to control them, and she has helped a many here! Post it as soon as possible, before those stupid ants present new insects, such as APIDS, or SCALE anda host of other problems to your trees..ok Watch how fast that member will help you. That is a great question, and many ways to rid them, but her advice always works..:-) Now, as for my pics,I will be posting as soon as I get time. We had several more days of cool and rain, and to tell you the truth, my trees never looked so good..lol Think we have had 20 out of 25 days days of cold and rain..sheesh..The coldest and cloudiest and wettest June on record! My trees love ot though. Thank God they are in Al's gritty mix, or they might of all died of rot. Take care, and keep the beautiful pictures coming everyone..Awsome!:-)...See MoreCitrus-- containers or ground?
Comments (6)I put mine in the ground. Two less pots that have to be moved during hurricane season is ok by me. I figured a 15 foot diameter area for each tree. The lemon I have is a Bearss or Eureka (label said both) and I have a key lime. The lemon is supposed to get that big, the lime probably only needs a 10 foot diameter space, but I wanted to err on the side of caution. The other issue is the possibility of low temperatures up here. 9b is a bit of a reach for the lemons and limes, more so than other citrus. They do better with attention to water and fertilization, but I have neighbors that have neglected (and I mean total neglect, no water, no fert) their trees for over 10 years and they are still producing heavily. The "queen" of potted fruit (gcmastiffs) is a great resource for ideas on potting trees, and I'm sure she will chime in soon....See MoreTell me if you do NOT use vinegar when you fertize container citrus
Comments (18)Stephen, pics please??? I would love to see what you have growing. Thank you Vladimir..What's the point of the question? There are many here that ABSOLUTELY need to use vinegar in their fertilizer solution and those that are lucky they do not have too. I see no point in it at all because everyone's water and pH is different. Some use rain water and some have tap that is just right, while others can't use rain water and others have the worst tap like I do. Some can't afford the other products suggested for their potted plants and use vinegar as a cheaper method that does work for the short term every time they fertilize. I'd like to know who uses it, regularly, and what happens over time when they stop? Sounds like a great thread I should start. ) There are going to be those that swear by it like I do, and many that have seen unbelievable/remarkable improvements in their trees within days , so good that they have no need to come here for help any more for YELLOWING , dull , and poorly nutrient fed almost lifeless trees, and then those who keep looking for answers to get them as vivd green and as healthy as possible as some folks around here. Vinegar as been very useful just as other acidifying products out there, especially for potted plants...Another tool in the bag sort of to say...... Also too, I can see the difference between those that make sure their pH is in harmony with their fertilizer over the years here, as compared to those that give pH no consideration especially for potted trees. A select few say they don't use vinegar at all and in my opinion not that it matters have less than ideal vivid trees to me, and many that use other products which I would like to know about that works and theirs look great..Now that would be very helpful. don't you agree? By the way, vinegar does a great job at lowering the fertilizer solution which is why many use it, and not for the purpose of lowering the 'soil' pH. Have a great day my friend Mike...See Moresautesmom Sacramento
