brussels sprout seedlings kidnapped

I planted my brussels sprout seedlings last night and this morning they are gone...totally gone! Not even 12 hours later. What in the world would take an entire seedling? It isn't just one either, it was three. I have had the seedlings outside for over a week now hardening off. I planted them in my raised bed maybe six feet from where I was hardening them off. If something was going to take them, why wouldn't it have happened while it was hardening off? I don't have rabbits. The only thing I have seen in my garden area are lizards. Would they do this? And finally the most important question...How do I protect the next set of seedlings I will plant? Do I put a makeshift chicken wire box around it? I have planted a lot of other things this year without any theft (tomatoes, basil, carrots, radishes, kohlrabi, lettuce). Any insight would be greatly appreciated.
