OT Our visitor today

The conversations board is dead, so you're all blessed with this post here. We had a visitor today. I've seen them in the river bed about 1/4 mile away, but never this close to civilization. My eldest son said, "Mom, there is a quail on the fence." I thought it was diversionary tactics...

I'm glad I looked.

He jumped down and headed on out...

He then crossed our yard. Yes, California is brown and dead most of the summer, especially for those conserving water.

Past the trash cans, into the neighbor's yard to talk to the chickens in front of us.

The California Quail (Callipepla californica) shares it's habitat with two other quail, the Gambel Quail (Callipepla gambelii) which looks almost identical to the California Quail and the Mountain Quail (Oreortyx pictus). The Chinese Painted Quail (Excalfactoria chinensis) aka button quail and Bobwhite Quail (Colinus virginianus) have both been released into this area and also compete for territory. This was a male California Quail looking for a girlfriend.
