Peach Tree Branch BROKE, what to do now?

UGH, I had meant to get out there and thin them, and of course just didn't get it done. Well the branch has broken, more than half way.

Do I just cut it off and that's that? or????

Help please.

It's my understanding that you can clean up the wound, put it back together and nail it tight and it will graft itself back together.

For a limb ripped off at the trunk, it might be worth trying. If it is half a branch, I'd probably just cut it off.

If there is still part of the bark and limb attached, you can prop it up and it will probably still ripen the fruit. Then you can amputate after you harvest.

Great big warning here: if you live in an area where nasty disease gets in through injuries, you are going to want to treat that wound area.

Yes, cut it off and that is that. Trying to nail or tie a peach branch back together is futile, and will not result in a branch capable of carrying any load.

I guess I don't have to give you hell about failure to thin your peaches, since you are probably giving yourself enough hell already. Hard lessons, but nearly everyone learns them. I lost a very fine peach branch a couple of seasons ago even after I had thinned it aggressively. Trouble is, I still left too many peaches on it and they became very, very heavy when mature. I could have propped it up with a board, but didn't do that either. This fruit growing is a live and learn business.

Oh, I forgot to mention that orig owner said tree is 10 yrs old,,don't know variety,,also had what I interpreted as peach curl that didn't do anything about since didn't know what it was,,bore good fruit, but not every year. 1/Thinking that planting second tree for "insurance" is good idea. DO YOU THINK RAINTREE NURSERY IS GOOD FOR BAREROOT TREES? Reading lots of posts last night. 2/Can I do any preventative things to stop any peach borer or that gel moth from every happening? 3/Regarding the little tree that maybe rootstock...can I find out by digging between the 2 trees since only 3 ft apart, to see if any root links them? Trying to see ASAP if that baby tree should be pulled out since it is multi-trunked etc. Could I put new tree in that hole (or big tree hole if doesn't pan out) while waiting the 2-3 yrs after serious pruning to see if it will bear any decent fruit? That way by the time I know I can already have another on the way. Is it bad to replant a 2-3 yr old nectarine/peach (newbie tree) should this main one fizzle out? Just thinking outloud and know you guys are much better at this in real life than anything I could read from previous posts or in books. Thanks again, Nicole

I had three trees damaged last winter. All three have different problems. One is dead, rootstock and all, one has so much damage it cannot produce a decent limb. The other recovered and put out huge limbs. You never want to bury the graft, that is planting the tree way too deep! The flare of the roots even should be exposed. You barely want to cover the roots. I planted some of mine too deep, or they sunk in. Now I mound the trees, so if they settle they are not so low in the ground. I'm going to dig one up this fall and mound it. it may set it back, but the deep plant will kill the tree eventually.The roots need oxygen, and buried deep they struggle. Bark is not meant to be buried and you are inviting fungal and insect problems by burying bark underground.

Hi Tx, That can happen with dissectums. If one entire side of the plant is gone the best thing to do is plant is with the missing section facing a wall or some other object. In that way the bad section doesn't show and it often looks like is was shapes to be in that spot. I have an acer Japonicum Green Cascade that is in front of a large window and it is shaped like a 1/2 circle if viewed from the top and looks good because of the setting. Other wise your going to have to shape or wire some new shoot to fill in the area that was broken. David

That's one reason I started training peaches to a central leader. Not only does it give me a center to tie sagging branches to but it generally leads to a more compact and stout tree.
