Alocasia Polly Bud -- BROKEN
Comments (6)Don't feel too bad--the flowers take strength from the plant to try to make seed. Not a big deal either way, but I like the leaves more than the plant. Right now I have an alocasia coming out of dormancy by putting up a flower, but no leaves yet! Kinda funny looking!...See MoreTaking proper care of my Alocasia Polly
Comments (5)Probably more detailed info than you are seeking but all your questions are answered in this link. Alocasia Polly is the same exact plant as Alocasia Amazonica. The "poly" variation was discovered in a batch of tissue cultured plants of Alocasia Amazonice in Miami. They just never grew large. The "Poly" came from the scientific term polyploid wince at one time the plant was thought to have a genetic deficiency. That has since proved to be incorrect. A tissue culture company in Florida changed it to Polly since that sounded more commercial. According to aroid botanist Peter Boyce in Malaysia, in time the plant is going to go dormant since that is part of its genetic hard wiring. It needs fast draining soil that will remain evenly moist and never become soggy. Otherwise saprophytic soil will develop and the bacterial organisms will destroy the tuber. Be aware it can remain dormant for periods up to years. If you keep it consistently warm you can prevent the dormancy period for some time or at least delay it. Others are going to have personal opinions but this article was researched by some of the old time members of the International Aroid Society and the information presented was recently adopted by the Royal Botanic Garden Kew in London on one of its websites. Most of the original info came from John Banta, a long time member of the IAS that actually knew the creator of the hybrid. The name Alocasia Amazonica came from the name of Salvador Mauro's nursery in Miami, "The Amazon Nursery". These plants do not grow naturally in the Amazon basis and the parents of the hybrid are natives of Asia. Read it all before you come to any final conclusion. Let me know if I can answer any questions that are not clearly addressed. Steve Here is a link that might be useful: Alocasia Amazonica...See MoreJust got a new Alocasia Polly
Comments (9)Is it hardy in your zone? Or, do you intend to dig it up and winter it indoors? I thought that amazonicus was pretty tropical, unable to withstand a zone 7 winter?? I have wintered over my upright EE and regular EE's. This year, I am going to try to winter over Black Magic, Nigra, fontanesii, Illustris, and a new Thai Giant I purchased from Plant Delights. Most of these that I talk about are hardy at least to zone 7b. If I mulch it really well, I think they will come back next year. Susan...See MoreAlocasia Amazonica Polly Advice Please!
Comments (9)Good deal indeed, they're so handsome! I don't know where you are, but I believe some Alocasias can go dormant; this may be one of them. I once bought one of these from a florist (I'll never make that mistake again) & wasn't warned it would go dormant, which it did. I thought it dead, so I threw it out, only to learn after the fact they sometimes go dormant. You may wish to read up on these & see if that's what's going on. Excuse me for disagreeing w/ some of the above, these do NOT get leggy, that is it's normal form & growth habit, very long stemmed leaves. Pls do not fertilize before finding out if it's going dormant. Also pls allow at least a few days for others to chime in w/ their opinions; there are folks who grow these here, it just may take a bit of time. Good luck w/ it....See MoreRelated Professionals
