Alocasia 'Polly' Debacle...help!

So...One of my cats is in the dog house for taking out a plant stand yesterday. I came home to find my Alocasia Polly obliterated on the floor--the two very tall stalks that were on it (I had been misting heavily this winter and didn't know they didn't like that until I was down to two leaves) were broken in multiple places. One was sending up a flower :( I had to cut them off, they were beyond salvage. It's one of my favorites, will the poor thing be able to make more leaves? The corms/rhizomes are still intact. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Ellen, sorry about your Alo..We love our pets, but they can be sooo destructive.
I have 3 Alo's and they love winter misting..
As long as the corms are intact, your plant should send out new growth..Don't discard..Give it time and see what happens. Good luck, Toni

Thanks, Toni! I had read somewhere that the Pollys don't like misting and when I stopped misting that one, I stopped losing leaves (but, I did have some rubbing alcohol and dish soap in there with the water to help deter mites, and maybe that was the problem). Anyhoo, I'm so glad that Polly's got a chance to come back!

I HAVE A ALOCASIA POLLY FOR A COUPLE OF MONTHS NOW AND IS NOT DOING WELL. THE LEAVES OF THE PLANT STARTED TURNING YELLOW AROUND THE EDGES AND IN THE CENTER OF THE LEAF ARE BLACK SPOTS. I POTTED IN A MIRACLEGRO SOIL BUT AFTER WARDS BECAUSE IT WAS GOING EVEN WORSE I REPOTTED IN FOXFARM OCEAN FOREST POTTING SOIL. I HAVE ONLY ONE LEAF LEFT AND I DON'T KNOW WHAT ELSE TO DO.

oh, i would've missed this post! i don't check that often here anymore. glad, i caught it! yah, i usually have 4-6" trunks between repots - so not as tall as yours :). the problem is that 'THE WINTER IS COMING!"...:)). you need to keep this very warm and in good light - if the bud does not grow until spring, the tuber might rot away without leaves....so i'd recommend the simple heating pad from the drug store (the one that does not shut-off as a safety feature) - CVS has them usually. then you can water it normally and even under lamp it should sprout. mine are still producing new leaves. i transferred them into my western window to get some weak direct sun for another mo or so...to keep them going for as long as i can. you need 2 leaves going into winter - count on one declining. if both drop off - that's when it might not wake up without supplemental bottom heat!. i always treat mine to 4 weeks of warm up in early spring :).

Looks like older leaves dying off. No biggie. However, these plants don't typically carry a lot of leaves per stem to begin with ... particularly when grown indoors. They like it hot and bright. Avoid direct, hot afternoon sun.

These plants don't make very good indoor houseplants, because they require heat to grow their best. Indoor temperatures, especially indoor air conditioned temperatures, just isn't enough to keep these plants happy. If they don't get the heat they require, then they'll shed their leaves and go dormant, much like they would in their native habitat. Currently, I have two of these plants growing outdoors here in the hot and humid South, and both of them are growing like weeds. I may not be able to tolerate it, but these plants crave it. Not only that, but both of mine are currently blooming. If you want this plant to thrive, then give it what it needs: indirect sunlight, fast draining soil, lots of water to keep the soil from drying out, and lots of that scorching summer heat. Without that heat, your plant will never be happy and would rather go dormant until the heat returns.

My cats also were in the dog house the other day. My alocasia polly had great big huge attractive leaves on it. That is until I came to find they had nibbled every single leaf on it. Now aren't they poisionous? I don't know why, but they have been attracted to that plant since I bought it. Any ideas?

If you can get a big fish tank or a terrarium they do really good in the winter in that. I love this plant so much I kept killing it every winter, I did not need a cat to do that for me. The moisture in the terrarium, I found it at the GW for 5.00, saved the last one I brought. It is outside for the summer now.
