Shefflera info

I bought a large shefflera a month ago from Lowe's (green-must be arbicola). This weekend I got another one from Martin's grocery store, dwarf shefflera. They look the same except the dwarf looks more compact. But after I got it home, I think it may be the very same tree. Doesn't matter, love them, beautiful plants but just wondering. I also got a variegated one.

At the office, there is a large shefflera tree with the leathery leaves like a palm that I take care of.

Hi Susan. Congrats. :)

There are different Schefflera species, with green leaves.

Have you considered growing the dwarf as a bonsai? Toni

don't particularly like bonsai.

Even though I love my trees, I don't really like to buy duplicates.

Hello, Al. We had some electrical stuff going on here and my power conditioner was going nuts. Today I had to chkdsk my drives and just got back online. I'm not sure yet what it takes to get started. No idea how much of anything I need, though I know I'm not ready to make large quantities yet. I would be mixing in small amounts since I would need to use a container that fit on my rather small table in the garage. If I only need three ingredients, I suppose I could talk my husband into storing three large bags, though I'm not sure what large means since fifty pounds of a lightweight material would be a lot larger bag than fifty pounds of stone. Would the T67 Soil Sieves at $17.97 be sufficient? They don't seem like they would be heavy. Someone mentioned esj collanders. If that's like the one I drain pasta or greens in, it sounds managable. I'm thinking a dishpan to mix the ingredients would be easier than something larger. Mid May seems so close! I know you say it wouldn't be a hardship to come early, but it feels like it would be such an imposition. At the same time it sounds so promising. I could check with my daughter (who has offered to help me) and see if she could be here to work with us and keep my brain less scattered. Since the fibro has gotten worse I get overwhelmed easily. Frustrating because I used to be easy going. I would need to get started now to have things here that we need, especially if I have to order them. Would you give me a better idea of what I would need to have ready and set up? Meantime, I'll check with Mary (my daughter) and see if she would be free on the 13th. Please, if anything comes up that makes it inconvenient, don't hesitate to let me know! Just a side note. One or two of the plants I bought seems to be planted in some kind of bark. The water just runs down the side of the pot and doesn't absorb at all. Is this a danger with bark or did they use the wrong kind/not enough other things mixed in. I don't usually let plants sit in water, but it seems the only way these can get a drink. I don't mind watering often; in fact it would be better because I would be less apt to forget if it was a more regular routine. Reminds me, I need to have pots also. So much to think about. Morning, My goodness this thread grew...:) Purple, I had to chuckle....Don't read between the lines. lol. Ok. Purp, no need to worry. You will not be held accountable for my stupidity if a plant or plants kick the bucket. I am indeed proud of you for coming up with the idea and sharing with us poor, over-crowded indoor gardeners. Believe me, so far, my combined plants are doing well, and would you believe, the YARD has more room??? Of course, while shopping yesterday, I did something I said I wouldn't do...browse plants at Home Depot, came home with Phonix roebelenii. A large plant! Asleep, my 'man.' How are you? How's the Scheff's coming along. Sorry, I didn't read all the posts, so will have to update to understand what you and Purp are discussing. As for long hair on men, you know my feelings..I think it's sexy. lol. The last line I read was you talking about moving tanks, and stuff on tanks..Ugh is right! I'm seeing Monsteras. Very pretty Philodendrons, but grow TALL. For some reason, a Monster, Split leaf? I bought at WAlmart before I said I wasn't going to be buying more plants, hangs...??? What's with that. It has a health problem, for sure..Everyday I find another brown leaf. The basket doesn't have a saucer, so it gets watered in the sink. To think, I left a smaller, much smaller version in the alley for someone to take..and they did. So, who's grouping what these days? Toni

Petrushka, I got so busy trying to figure out how to post more than one picture in a post, I forgot to thank you for the links to Dave's Garden that were very helpful. Thank you for the help, it was very informative. I can easily believe problems at 28 degrees since it hits that fairly regularly in Upland - at least every couple years. In the freeze down to mid 20s around 7-8 years ago, mine was taken out completely and the neighbors tree shown in the first picture survived. Mine is in an almost identical location against the south side of a similar house just 100 yards west. I was amazed at the info from the person in Long Beach. I lived just a couple miles down the coast in Huntington Harbor for a long time before moving back "home" to Upland. The original Tupidanthus plants that I planted were patio plants at my house in Huntington Beach. It froze ONCE during the 18 years I lived there and I think 28 degrees was the all-time record low that broke the record that had stood for around 100 years.

You have a lot of options to consider, but IS getting pretty late to chop it back hard or do any serious pruning. I mean, you really don't want to remove all the plant's food-making factories (leaves) just as it's about to take a break for the winter. Where you live has an impact on what your realistic present time options are, so maybe we should find that out at this point & then figure out what to do/ what you can do. Adding your zone and state or city/state to your user info will help others give you the most specific advice, so you might consider that option. Al

Yes there is a larger species also. It grows in Hawaii I think. Thats probably the species in your office.
The one that appears dwarf could be just grown under the correct lighting conditions. Most plants grown under less light than they really need will be elongated...longer length in between sets of leaves etc. As they grow they stretch and reach for the light.

I noticd the diff in lengths on mine as I bring them in and outside thru the year.

Arboricola is often called dwarf schefflera, but if your plant seems even tighter than sp arboricola, it's likely Schefflera arboricola 'Luseane'.

Susan - I'm not bonsai crazy either, although I do enjoy looking at the bonsai stuff at the botanical gardens.

I have two of the large Schefflera's as well as quite a few of the mini's and two of the variegated. Love those mini's as they are so easy to propagate. Although I am half scared to do it, I would like to prune at least one of the larger ones into more of a tree form. What do y'all think? Any tips?

Thanks. I believe there is a thread somewhere on the forum about pruning the schefflera. I'm certainly not talented in that way. LOL! I would probably have the thing looking all lopsided.

I enjoy looking at bonsai but never wanted one.

Susan, true Bonsais (Maples, Oak) are beautiful; growing indoors is another thing..lol. Like Moonie, I love looking at mature Bonsais at the Conservatory.

The reason I mentioned Scheff bonsai is, since it only gets 'yay' tall, (true dwarf) if grown in a small container, the main truck might thicken, tree-like. Not necessarily a bonsai...
But, if you don't like a tree-look, that's different. My Scheffs are grown bushy and one semi-tree-like. That would be S. actinophylla or Brassaia actinophylla, commonly known as Octopus Tree. Leaves differ from Arboricola.

Susan, prune a little at a time, until desired shape is formed. And yes, there is info about pruning, small, medium and large Scheffs on the net.

Moonie, about shaping. You have two options.
One is removing/taking cuttings, and starting from scratch.
Second option. Prune all but the thickest, healthiest stem/trunk. Some root-pruning will be required. Stake the one branch, let grow. Care for as usual, but it's important to remove side-shoots/stems to keep the tree-shape (standard) appearance.

Some S. species look better as trees than others. Toni
