SVB eggs or other eggs on squash

If you scrape them off and squish them, but some fall to the ground accidentally...can/will they still hatch and cause damage?

I've wondered about that too. I decided that if they fall on the ground that when they hatch, the little buggers will be out of their normal beginning habitat and likely die [I hope].

Can't answer your question. But I hold a water filled cup underneath when I scrape them off or else rip off the part of the leaf the eggs are on and put it in a Ziploc bag. I dig a deep hole far from the squash and pour the water and eggs into it. I figure the nymphs have a good chance of finding their way to a leaf if they hatch on the ground and a leaf is closeby...but I really don't know.

No, don't spray the soil with any oil! Since the young SVBs need to hatch on the leaves to immediately begin feeding, can you add some soil around the base of the plants in hopes of suffocating it if it hatches, which it may or may not do? Don't pile the soil up to the first leaves, but many people do transplant squash seedlings a bit deeper than they were growing, so the stems can stand some soil that is deeper. But if you do cover them now, keep on the lookout for a borer, just in case. If you have only one, you're lucky!

when they fall into the ground, I usually scrape away some of the dirt where I think it fell, and put new dirt, or mulch over that area pretty good. That way when the hatch they are covered with dirt or much and will have a hard time finding the plant. I would think you dusting the area will Sevin should do the trick

OK Arizona explains it as SVB are considered an east of the Rockies pest only. That doesn't mean you don't have any that wander in, just that they aren't regarded as a significant pest in AZ and each state IMP focuses on primary pest problems for their state. Below I linked the U of AZ IPM website - all sorts of info on what are considered your dominant pests. And they offer a Monthly Calendar of Pest Activity you can explore. Click on each month for a list of pests associated with that month. May seems to be your grub hatch so SVB pupae would likely hatch about the same time. I read on another thread that masking tape works to lift the eggs off. Then all you do is throw the tape with the eggs in the trash. Sounds like a good idea but I haven't had a chance to try it.
