Everyone I know here in southern oregon are doing just great with tomatoes and cucumbers.

Cukes are going gangbusters, but there's been too little sun and hot weather for the tomatoes to ripen. However, in the next county, my sister-in-law is picking half-ripe and setting them on window sills. But I did get my plants in a little later than usual. They are huge green Brandywines, though.

Tomato problems? Sure, much of the east coast (13 states last I read) is getting wiped out by late blight. Even some now showing up down here. And early blight seems to be having a banner year too all over those parts of the country getting all the excessive rain.

Cucumber mosaic virus and powdery mildew also thrive in very wet years like this one. News reports that nursery and garden centers are doing booming business selling fungicides - when you can still get them. Thanks to all the rain it is a banner year for fungus diseases.

My cukes have been fantastic. Tons of great ones, though the picture on the package and what I've been harvesting are two completely different things! They're still super tasty though. I think they've about lived their life at this point, though they'll definitely be on my list next year. I may plant another one for the fall too.

The tomatoes have been a mix. My Jet Star got killed off by leaf spot of some kind, and had to be pulled. Only got a couple actual tomatoes off that one. My Juliet however has been going like gangbusters. I have a bowl full of ripe and nearly ripe ones, I've given away bags of them, and there's more ripening on the vines. I'll definitely do that one again!

There was actually a front page story in the local paper recently about the poor tomato crops. Seems a lot of people around here have been having trouble, either due to disease or the wacky weather.
