Hitting the upper barrier of chill requirements

Axel

I never thought I would hit an upper barrier to what I can grow from a chill requirement. So far, I've been able to grow just about anything in our medium to high chill climate, (650 hours on the warm Winter years, 1000 hours on the cold Winter years. I can grow all kinds of cherries, even Bing, which is loaded this year, moorpark apricot, just about any apple - well, apparently "almost" any apple.

Well, I have three French cider apples that simply refuse to break dormancy, and it's already approaching the end of June. The varieties are "Bedans des parts", "Noel des champs", and "Reinette D'armorique". Not a sign of life, they are barren, dormant, simply not growing. I've never seen this on any variety before. It's quite interesting.

Anyone else have any experience with these old cider varieties?
