What the heck?

What the heck is this catterpillar? it was about 2 and half inches long and i found it on a stem of a bell pepper plant. It was quite camouflaged but the little white egg sacks gave it away.

I noticed that particular plant had been munched on over the past couple days. I wonder if this is the culprit?

Follow the link. This website is SUPER helpful for things like this. Most likely the white things are parasitic wasps. So at the website on the left hand side you can click caterpillars and browse through those, or you can look through wasps and find the wasp which will lead to the caterpillar. If this does not help you can always send them a pic and ask them personally.

I went ahead and checked for you and it was on the first page.
It is a Hornworm I'm pretty sure it's a tobacco hornworm. The post says it was found on a bell pepper plant (like yours) and the white things are in fact Brachonid wasp pupae. The worm is in fact doomed...

I don't think I've ever seen an old attic which didn't have flooring--I'd bet that practice started after the war when so many houses needed to be built for returning vets, since most of those didn't have full-height attics. :) I find the beaverboard interesting, and I think that is what I removed from my basement ceiling--it only covered the part under the living room for some reason--maybe to keep stuff from the old coal furnace getting into the upstairs? My house was built in 1908, and yet, my attic has the original finish--lath and plaster! It was even papered, but I don't know the pattern since every scrap of wallpaper in the house was painted over at least once--the downstairs hall had at least three coats of paint and about 1/16" of paper!

I know you put some measurements in OP but would like to see next to something familiar for perspective?? You said a little more than a foot long and about 3.5 "circumference"?? Maybe diameter? That size circumference would be smaller than index finger to thumb "circle"??

Over here most of our Erigeron species are biennial, except canadensis which is annual. I like these searches, because I learn what species are growing in other places. It's not a threat until it finishes flowering and starts producing seeds. You have some attractive Erigeron species there. Here, a lot of people consider most Erigeron species as weeds. I did also for awhile, but now I let some anuus and philidelphicus vollunteers grow, if they aren't being a threat to any nearby plants, and then I pull them before they set seed. The species in the UK that I saw observations for are anuus, canadensis, floribundus, purpuratus, karvinskianus, sumatraensis, acris. and glaucus. Here, in eastern NA, the only species unanimusly thought to be garden worthy is Erigeron pulchellus. The western US has some beautiful Erigeron species. I try to go with the flow, so instead of spending time and effort trying to grow feverfew or chamomile, which have similar flowers, why not let some Erigeron vollunteers grow and flower. Unless you plan to grow Chamomile to make tea. I'm assuming that most Erigeron species over there are also biennial?

Wow thx for the response link8879! I bet that lil bugger did eat some of them leaves on my bell pepper plant! and god bless the brachonid wasp! lol.

Nature sure is an amazing thing.

Unfortunately, that same caterpillar, I believe, becomes a hummingbird moth, which does a tremendous amout of pollinating--especially gourds, whose white blossoms open at night. It all balances out.
