easy plant to grow indoors?

I just thought I would throw this out there to see what everyones thoughts would be. I don't have the best green thumb but I try. I have a tea rose begonia that I have kept alive and happy for 2 years and I would like to try a couple more plants to see if I can have the same good results. Any suggestions would be great! Thanks in advance for your advice!

I think most plants are easy to grow if you know their needs beforehand and can realistically provide for those needs.

I can't grow palms or vining philodendron because I realized long ago they need more time than I want to give.

But I can grow the heck out of African violets, streptocarpus, chirita, rhizo begonias and small spathyllum....the first four many say are hard to grow...because all do well when reservoir watered.

I'm lazy and certain plants would suffer for it and I know my limits.

Oh, I do grow holiday cactus real well and self-heading philos and rhipsalis and sans. But forget anything else.

I think u should give yourself a little more credit. That Begonia probably wouldn't be on anyone's list of "top 10 easiest plants to grow" and you're doing it well. There's no reason you shouldn't expect other plants to do equally well. If you like it, buy it. Whatever it is, there's probably lots of people here who can give you specific advice for that plant if you have any questions. If you're hesitant, see what you like out there and ask here for recommended care to see if it's a plant you think you could do well with before spending your money.

If I had to choose, I'd plant zinnia. No question. Now, dahlias are gorgeous flowers but they require dead-heading to produce well, and even then flower production can be iffy IME. I've had dahlias produce a fair amount of blooms and other times very few. I've started dahlias from tubers in the past, and one year it took until end of July or so to see any flowers, even though I did pot up the tubers a few weeks before planting out and kept warm under my light cart. One advantage dahlia have over zinnias is more attractive foliage IMO - if grown well, they are lovely, bushy plants with healthy deep-green foliage that is attractive in its own right (note I've only grown the shorter cultivars, so my experience is based upon the growth habit of the shorter varieties). OTOH, zinnias bloom their stinkin' heads off and don't require much in the way of tending - though I prefer to deadhead, if I don't get around to it, the zinnias bloom beautifully anyway. Looking for easy growing fragrant house plant...

My favorite fragrant house plant is a small shrub, Murraya paniculata, which has a great orange blossum fragrance and it is apt to bloom several times a year. If you have a window that gets sunlight, it is what I recomend. It would do best if you did put it out for the summer (in a semi-shaded spot) but that is true of most house plants. Do you have any idea why the jasmine did not thrive? Perhaps too much sun or too little time for it to make the adjustment to outdoor conditions? Understanding what went wrong would help alot with your next plant. Wishing you great success --- Jerry

Hi Rhonda, It's either 20 or 23.00 per month..before we had this package, I'd find myself making long distance calls and they really added up..Yep, I agree, in a way we're getting ripped, but I know if we stopped it, I'd have to make 1000 long distant calls a month..lol.. I talk to a few ppl from the puter, some live in CA, some Fl and other states..once we get on the phone, we'll chat up to 2 hours..LOL..so it 'sort of' works out in the end. We don't have a cell phone, Rhonda, so I don't have that option. I also get a deal on toll calls, which I use way more than local calls..That's what adds up on the bill..98% of our phone calls are toll. I'm sorry about your b/p..make sure you take your meds..there's so much sadness in the world these days..What are blood pressure pusher uppers? LOL Snasxs, didn't mean to take over your thread..sorry..How tall is your plant? How old? Where did you find it? I know STeve from Raretropicalplants sell them, but they ARE expensive..I've some smaller variegated split leaves, but nowhere near as nice as yours, or as tall either..Toni

It's been really busy for me at work and I could hardly tend to my garden. Glad to see this thread still alive and kicking. We had a scorching week with temperatures reaching mid 80s last week. I was not really worried about too cold nights. But now I will start prepping my tropicals for indoor. Love all the pictures...beautiful begonias Petrushka. And Rob, as usual enjoyed each of the pictures you clicked. You have an artistic eye for sure :) love the red and white adenium. What is it called and where can I order the plant from? because of the pleasent fall temperatures my plants are blooming like crazy...here are few pictures from this morning: My newest possession, African mask alocasia Today's surprise bloomer- my tropical hibiscus Double thousand bells in profusion- infact this had been blooming crazily since late spring The mandaville has also started setting out lot more buds Few Tropicals Geranium rozanne - this one is actually in ground but couldn't help but sharing...I planted it in spring and it's been happily blooming away since then...low maintenance, shade tolerant long blooming perennial...what more could I ask for :) And lastly I must admit, sharing pictures was a pain this morning. Something went wrong with the new version of software I guess. Hopefully houzz will fix that soon. enjoy your Sunday folks...happy gardening.

Wild4. I agree with both Linda and Purple. Providing a plants' needs-- next, you under-estimate yourself. Begonias are NOT the 'top 10 easiest plants to grow.'

To narrow down an answer, is there any specific type you're looking for. Qualities? In other words, a plant that's tall,small, hanging, flowers, foliage, colorful, cactus, tropical.

Which directions do your windows face, and how close to the windows are you willing to set plants?

I am so sorry, I got so involved in what I grow/can't grow I forgot you add kudos to you for growing a begonia well. As Purple said, they are not easy. If you do well with them you can grow about anything.

Thank you so much for all of the kind words. I really love having plants in the house and with the help of some wonderful people, I feel I can accomplish it!! My aloe plant is another story but I'm trying and that's all I can do!! I always have loved African violets so I might pick one up this week and see how it goes. Thanks for all of the help and encouragement. If I have any other questions, I will be sure and ask the experts!!!
