I just got back from a really nice visit to Chicago. I pruned some friends' trees and ended up with a nice dinner and lunch, enjoyed some wonderful company, and got to go to the Midwest Bonsai Show at the Chicago Botanic Gardens, where I also saw a lot of people I know. I really enjoyed the time away. I just came from your other thread with a link to this one. I think the only question I would have had was, "Did you keep the roots moist/wet while going through the repotting steps?" I think that's one of the most critical issues when repotting. I always keep the roots wet, and almost always repot the plant (with wet roots) into a dry gritty mix and then water well as soon as the soil is settled around the roots. Depending on the plant, I often don't observe any wilting at all in most plants, but I wouldn't be too surprised to hear that a Croton might pout a while - even if for no reason other than because it's upset that it is finally going to have to recognize that control has shifted from plant to grower and it now has to adapt. Lol Two weeks until the first fertilizer is about what I wait. That doesn't have anything to do with the roots being 'tender', or not able to tolerate a full strength dose of fertilizer - they CAN, but withholding fertilizer stimulates the roots to 'reach out' for nutrients, which speeds root colonization of the pot and faster reestablishment. Securing the plant to the pot so it can't move in relation to the pot goes a long way toward faster reestablishment, as well. Al

Hi Nanc. Zebra Plants prefers medium, bright light. Direct summer light, from a west or south window is too harsh, unless Zebra is several feet away. Winter is a different story. Setting your Zebra in south or west windows in winter won't burn leaves, and provides enough light. Also, during summer months, Zebras need more water and fertilizer. (though I don't fertilize in winter.) Although Zebras like moist soil, never keep muddy. Soil should dry a bit between waterings. I waited until leaves wilted to a degree, then watered. There's more than watering and fertilizing Zebra plants, 'for flowering.' Toni

Ok, so I'm opinionated. Your first grass is a zebra grass... My suggestion is, if you like it because it is a banded grass ( I see many many yards whose only ornamental grass is a zebra grass) I suggest you may be happier in the long run returning the grass and swapping it for a porcupine grass ('strictus' versus 'zebrinus'). Strictus will never flop in rain, and is generally considered a superior candidate in the banded grass arena. Some will surely disagree -- you may be one. Re. planting -- I always plant my grasses with a few shovelfulls of very fine chipped gravel mixed in with the organic material. I also use fine chipped gravel as a top dressing. Hi Anna! What a beautiful plant! I'm no expert, but I believe it is just recovering from the stress of re-potting. My African violets, which are also in the Gesneriaceae family, do the same thing after being re-potted. They're usually fine after a few days. I cannot say for sure though as I have never owned a lipstick plant (although I would love to). I hope this helps and good luck, damask_rose_5 : )
