Silver Queen corn late planting

I have some freed up dirt I want to plant some Silver Queen corn in. Had good results with it every year. Usually I planted in late April. Never tried this late.

I am in TN. If I got it in the ground in the next day or two, any bets on if I could get it in before the first frost hits?

I wish I would have gotten it in the ground 2 or 3 weeks ago but the dirt I want to plant it in now, had beans in it.

only if the frost holds off until november. It will take 3 full months for it to mature, you'd be taking a risk.

However, nothing ventured, nothing gained :) I say go for it

What are you worried about? Both are plain "SU" types so the only thing that could happen if they would happen to cross is a few yellow kernels on some white Silver Queen ears. And I agree with other comments but if you are concerned you can also just remove the Early Sunglow tassels as soon as the first Early Sunglow silks start to darken. But their maturity dates are closer to 3 weeks apart so you really won't even have to anything. Just enjoy.

Cool, thanks for the $0.02 farmerdill! I grew some Silver Queen in my nursery (I work for a seed company, but I'm not a corn breeder) and it did well. The biggest issue we had in the Texas Panhandle this year was heat during pollination and the corn in my garden was questionable for a while. The silks didn't emerge until the tassels were almost done shedding pollen. So an earlier hybrid would also help to beat the heat.

Toni Just spraying with mild dish detergent and picking off with a "mealy stick" (my name but just a piece of wood with a pointed end to get at difficult areas on a plant). Also, an old tooth brush is a big help. Most important is to monitor continually each day for several weeks. As mentioned previously, I am at the point that I now look at ever 2nd day and will until end of summer or even longer. Have read that mealy larva can pop up weeks later and I believe it. (At this time of year my plants are outside on an apt balcony, so will continue to inspect.) Don't mind the attention / time it takes because love being around the plants. Also, don't care for pesicides so that is one reason why I went the route I did. Jazz

I'm in zone 2b; I've heard that SQ isn't nearly as aggressive in colder climates. Thanks for the help, Donna, but I'm afraid it's already a gonner. I dug it up, cleaned off all the dirt, and put it in a very dilute bleach solution. After about half an hour, I inspected the roots again...even though many of the roots still look white and healthy, and the plant itself still looks fairly healthy, the crown/base of roots is all black. I guess the rest of the plant is living on stored energy and will die soon. *sigh* So I threw it out.

If you can find seed, I might also suggest an earlier maturing variety. I once used Mirai 421W (71 days) as a 'buzzer beater' that I planted in mid July. (I'm in NY) I lost about 1/2 the crop to the frost, but even fairly immature ears were still sweet.

I liked your term "buzzer beater"! LOL!

Seems, I have a buzzer to beat too. I hope I can get `em in before the buzzer sounds! LOL!

Oh, one other thing. Living in the south, anyone ever noticed that the bees disappear as the season gets cooler? I have. Sometimes wonder if this doesn`t affect crop yields.

I agree with all that has been said. You could take your chances, find an earlier variety and even the notion one should watch the bees...Bees are tireless until nature waves that black veil upon them..in September here in the NE bees are out of their mind. They're dying. The female is the worker bee, the male fans the hive. It's a long life to them and they tell you when it's time to start shaking out the blankets. I wish you the best i really do. because a man who tries is a man who do's. Worst case scenario is it doesn't finish but whatever that grows returns to the ground as compost. I plamted my late corn June 26th or so...it's about 4 feet tall now, some smaller....I've got a short window myself but i'm gonna try to get those stalks taller with fish emulsion(2x a week). You've got to try got nothing to lose and plant some beans with the corn for nitrogen. Beans would overwhelm new corn though. I waited until my corn was 3 feet and change. Growing fast now in the heat. Best of luck.
