That is interesting. I bought five plants at a daylily growers' mid-summer sale in late June - which I know is not the best time to buy or plant here in the south - got them home, potted them up and left them next to one another where they only got filtered sunlight just to be safe. After the big heat wave in August, I moved the group of five still in pots to a new location where I have had a lot of success with potted daylilies. Two of the lilies bloomed while in their original location, the third started blooming about 10 days ago and now has a rebloom scape a week or so away from blooming. The fourth plant was only a small fan and a single leaf because that was all the grower had left of that cultivar. It didn't bloom, but its doing fine and the single leaf is now a healthy small fan. The fifth plant was Mort Morss. It didn't bloom in its original location, but looked OK. A week after I moved the group, it still looked fine, but I had to go on a week's business trip and when I got back it was droopy and somewhere between yellow and brown and too far gone from crown rot to save. Maybe some plants are more susceptible to crown rot that others just as some are more susceptible to rust. I sure don't know, but it is an interesting coincidence. Larry

I sure agree with you....no more Dream Queens....I'm glad you are getting Rainbow's End as I really like my new one...the flower scape is a pretty pink/mauve tinge and looks just great with the hosta leaves. It is quite attractive as a mature specimen. Avocado is a fragrant - great choice. I am aiming for all of Guacamole's relatives so Avocado is definitely on the list! :-) I'm so glad you have a very high hosta survival rate! Way to go, girl!!!

I lost all 6 of my Queens last winter. They were all almost a foot in diameter, nice big trees. They had survived lows in the low 20's several times with fronds burning slightly but we had two arctic fronts in early January back to back with more than 24 hours of sub freezing temps. Five died. All 5 had spear pull. I don't think they can ever recover from pull. Only the largest one lived to put out new fronds in the spring but eventually died as well after putting out several stunted fronds. Lots of folks along the Gulf Coast have planted these palms over the last 10 years (during this stretch of mild winters) and thought they were at least zone 9 hardy, but sooner or later, we will have one of those bad winters where temps plunge into the low 20's for extended periods of time and realize these palms don't survive this kind of weather. You either replant them and expect to have to do this from time to time or go on to something else. Sadly, I think yours are gone. Steve

Pauline, there are 3 sizes of trifasciata cultivars, the Hahnii type is smallest, some stacking Hahnii's can reach a foot but others are to around 6 inches. Intermediate sizes grow from about 1 foot to 18 inches depending on temps and culture, and usually have proportionally wider leaves, Then there are the full-size varieties that grow as tall as the species, 3 to 5 feet. Silver Queen is one of the latter, Moonshine is an intermediate. Silver Hahnii would represent the short variety in this trio of silver trifasciata cultivars. As Stush said, Mother Nature had a little joke on us in that Silver Queen propagates true from leaf cuttings, as does Silver Hahnii, but Moonshine does not. It instead produces Robusta, a plant of the same dimensions but has regular trifasciata coloration, pattern and banding. Robusta does propagate true from leaf cuts. Trifasciata v. Robusta shouldn't be confused with the species S. robusta, which is another plant entirely. What has happened to Silver Queen? I guess it didn't have enough color, or 'pop' as interior decorators say, to keep up with brighter colored sans in the market place. Hi Barb! Russ
