I'm not sure how translations got mixed up and probably doesn't make a difference in the lovely painted plaque and how much joy and beauty it brings about but just so you don't embarrass yourself to any Spanish speaking friends in the future.

casa de luna morado translates in English to
house of moon resided

home of purplemoon would be
casa de luna purpúrea

Now that I am learning Spanish I am embarrassing myself every other day. The only thing I get perfect in speaking is the accent. One worng word got the kids giggling like hyenas. It took me 2 hrs to find the bad word I misspoke. LOL

CT, I don't think translations got all that mixed up. Nor will I be embarrassed when anyone sees my sign. I checked on google about translations and there are several. Here is the one that relates to my sign from a Spanish to English online dictionary.

Coloredthumb, congrats on learning Spanish. Some words in the Spanish Language are different depending on the country you live because of idioms. Morado is the color purple. And guess what purpuro is also purple. Casa de Luna Morado does translate to the House/Home of Purple Moon, because morado is used as an adjective. And Morado is the most common usage of Purple in the Southwest.

My funniest experience was in Miami where someone told me to take the guagua, which is what they called a bus, and I called un camion; and when my babies were learning both English and Spanish at the same time they called Water/Agua in baby talk guagua! LOL

Anything with Luna in it has to be a hit! he-he I have no idea if my nickname is correct or not for Happy Full Moon in Spanish. I just thought it sounded so exotic. he-he Luvstocraft did a fantastic job painting it. I love it!

Okay now I'm getting freaked. If I am learning Spanish from a woman friend born and reared in Spain and I go to Spanish speaking Caribbean Islands or Mexico the words are going to be that different? The lesson on the Roseta Stone didn't talk about idioms being an issue if you travel/ Will I be able to speak with others, will They understand me? and OMG am I learning a baby talk? I'm not going. I can't go if I screw up these business meetings by offending some one with the wrong idiom word I will loss everything I'm trying to accomplish. How long will it take me to learn idioms from all the areas? I have 12 weeks left to have Spanish as a functioning 4th language. OMGOMGOMG How do I know the idions to learn how many are there. I've got stress now IBS kickin in

I would not be embarrassed to let anyone see that beautiful painted plaque. It makes a gorgeous statement with or without words. Idioms or not!
if you tell someone with a different idiom it means "such and so" they think it means "no go and fallen" but go their merry way thinking whoever dimwits for thinking is means "such and so", or does everyone in the world know about Spanish idioms but me? OMG OMG OMG I'm still freaking out!

CT, I know nothing about foreign languages. I can screw up English just fine. LOL. But living in Phoenix where there are so many Mexicans, I know that Spanish isn't simple at all. Schools teach Spanish if kids want to take it, but its not what the Mexican version is. When the police dept wanted some of their officers to become bi-lingual, it didn't work for them to take Spanish classes. The Mexicans didn't understand them or vice versa. So a program was started where officers were sent to live with host families in Mexico and learn it there. The host families spoke NO English, so the officers really had to learn and fast.
I would guess the Spanish in Mexico can be very different from the Spanish in Spain. Try not to freak and just do your best. If people know you are just learning, I'm sure they will help you when you need.

When we were stationed in Spain, I knew NO Spanish.
I got along just fine with my poor words. I did take a Spanish course while there, but a lot of what I learned was from my maid, and my gardner! You would do fine even tho it is 'different'. However, we had a Cuban wife that said a lot about the words being different and that her Cuban would never be the same, with all the idioms she was picking up. LOL
Mexican is still different from that!

That sign is full of LUV. Here in CA there are a lot of immigrants coming in. The welfare office can not find translators...the language appears to be different even from village to village. Sometimes they can not speak to one another. So do not stress over not have it perfect to go on vacation. The fact that you are learning is wonderful. And it is your 4th? I understand that if you speak spanish, then italian and french and one other language is easy to learn cause of the same word but different accent or ending.

How is that Rosetta program by the way. I can understand a bit of Spanish but can not speak it. I am just not a linguist at all. I speak American and Texan...that is about it. LOL.

Rosetta program is a good help. I use it when I don't have a person working with me. I am not going to give up learning another language. If I can order a meal say please and thank-you and find out where the bathroom is in any language I will be okay. I just like to learn. I have ASL, Italian and French enough to make myself understood and mostly understand what is being said to me. German is coming along in little bursts but I'm not serious studying it yet and I remember smatterings from childhood. I am by no means fluent in any language except English. I have just a working knowledge. When I have gotten Spanish to the point I am not laughed at I want to take a stab at Japanese. It sounds so fun. I can understand a few thngs in many languages but can't speak them yet. Russian is on the list in the future.

Whatever the translation is missing or not, I think that the sign is absolutly fabulous. And to have it presented to you as a special gift from a friend who knew how much it would mean to you is one of the most precious gifts ever. I think the painting is perfect, she is a very talented artist.
Colored thumb..if you think spanish is hard to learn & want to take a stab at Japanese.. I live in a town where Fuji came to build a plant. I have learned a few simple phrases from those wonderful people. I have also learned that so many words sound the same to a certain point but have HIGHLY different meanings..alot derogortory, so be very careful with that

Luna Morado ..... that's just lovely ..... a really beautiful sign that you can always treasure because it's specially made by your dear friend! That makes it priceless.

As to the speaking Spanish ... my son-in-law is Mexican and Portuguese. My daughter can speak Spanish quite well for an anglo. Amazes me to hear them talk. I do well with the words on paper, and recognize about half of them. But when the words are actually spoken quickly, I get so dang lost! I don't know if I'll ever learn to speak it, but I try as I go along, because I don't want my grandsons mumbling things under their breath that I can't understand LOLOLOLOL.

It reminds me of when hubby and I took dance lessons .... we did just fine until they put it to music. LOL .... maybe slow motion only for me ..... I'm not dancing with the stars material :-)

Gosh this forums is so wonderful!!!! We go from the beautiful plaque to language lessons to dancing and back to the Luna Morado with not a beat skipped. I now want to dance in the meadow of moon flowers, under the waning moon & stars, listening to the gentle Spanish guitars lull away the days woes.

This certainly has been an interesting thread!

While reading it, I've gone from being thrilled that Karen liked the little sign, to thinking I needed to paint her another one with different wording, to being relieved that the words are okay and back to being thrilled that Karen liked the little sign AGAIN! ;o)

Thanks for all the sweet comments about my painting and the friendship that has developed between Karen and me. It is so fun to be able to brighten someone's day with a little something. And it is reciprocal, Karen does that for me almost daily with cute emails or friendly messages. And thanks for continuing my education on different languages--my DIL's parents are from Costa Rica, so I too am trying to learn a few words of Spanish.
