Blueberries that I planted in the fall

I planted (24) 2 year old potted blueberry plants in late fall, and I have been watching them all winter, waiting for them to start growing. I did my best to try to ammend soil w. organic matter and get PH correct. They are about 18-24" tall, and were full of tiny buds when I got them, and through the winter (no fruiting buds yet). The canes are redish brown, which scares me a bit. Most of my fathers bushes have canes that are much more green.

Now, blueberries are starting to grow in my area, but the new plants are only starting to grow on about the bottom 1/3 of the plants. How do I tell if the top part of the plants are dead? Some of the plants have green canes down low, which appear to be growing well. I am tempted to prune off the tops of the plants in the next week or two to try to send all energy into the new growth. Will new bushes normally grow from the base like this or fill in top to bottom?
