Maybe spider mites, maybe due to lack of humidity... but why did you let it get bone dry?

Curled and yellow leaves, especially if they are the lower leaves, seems like underwatering to me. This plant likes to be moderately moist, it's a tropical not a succulent. Give it high humidity and temperatures between 70º-90ºF. The exposure is correct.
I hope it gets better. I love this plant, too. Mine is beginning to flower at the moment.

Mine goes out, along with all of my houseplants. Prayer plants, begonias, and other tropicals love the humidity I get here in PA, and they look great by the end of the summer. They struggle through the winter when the air is so dry inside. The prayer plant stays in the shade!

In summer I only put succulents outside because it's so dry. From October to June, it's tropicals paradise,between 50% and 70% humidity inside the house. It goes down to 30% in summer inside and outside around 20%.

Marantas love humidity and some sun..I've two, one in a mini gh and the other (different room) 5' from a west window and a few feet from north..I set them on trays, plus daily misting..any damaged leaves are promply cut.
Mine don't go outside, but if I were to do so, I'd set in a shady spot..especially at first. Plus keep an eye on the soil, in case heat dries it up.
I do allow soil to dry a little before adding more water, but in my case, the added humidity helps..again tray/spraying/and in winter we keep a humidifier running. I also have an indoor fountain sitting on the table w/my Marantas, Calatheas, etc. Toni

Ok...update! I didnt mean to let it go bone dry... i just didnt realise it would dry out that quick...ok ive noticed a few things...since ive posted this..im losing another two leaves,I watered it, ive checked for mites...and i mist it daily... it sits in the shade happily.. but these leaves keep turning yellow!...nowww heres a big give away...or atleast i think it is...ive just took the plant out of the pot and its roots are crawling out! nowwww i think i read somewhere they do not like being watered from the base? so since its spring time im thinking repotting.this is frustratingggg! it seems to be the only problem with this plant is that the leaves one by one turn yellow! oh and one more thing... ive tried looking for a mist tray? cant find em anywhere...so i just spray via bottle.. oh... but it doesnt stop my plant from growing brand spanking new leaves thou so not all bad! thanks for your repliessss! :)

Make a tray - take any wide traylike thing with at least 1" high sides, fill it with stones and water. Sit the pot on it but never let the water touch the pot. Stop spraying, it's counterproductive! Your leaves may be yellowing either from (still) not enough water, but more likely crummy peat-based potting soil that's holding water too long and needs a lot more grit and perlite in the mix for faster drainage. It's always best to water well when you do it, then wait a few days depending on the plant and conditions. Your plant is rootbound though, and isn't 'using' water properly, so get it out of that pot (have another ready first) trim away longest, oldest, woody roots and reset everything into the slightly larger pot, filling in all around with new soil. Give it a good drink and a few weeks to recover.

Nlky, I save all types of containers to use in place of store-bought humidity trays.
Stouffer's TV dinners are a great start..don't know if you eat frozen dinners or not. LOL..One thing I like about them is they come in different sizes/shapes.
If you buy flats in spring (annuals/perrenials) pick up the rectangular trays that flats come in..they work great as humidifying trays..In fact, at the end of the season, stores toss trays in the trash. I'm sure if u asked they'd hand them to you, for free.
Marantas can be tricky, like their cousins Stromanthe, Ctananthe, and Calathea. My 2 marantas sit in a semi-sunny locations and only watered when top soil feels dry/looks crumbly..Not too dry, not wet. I've killed more prayer plants by overwatering (yrs ago)..since, I've learned a big lesson.
Every so often, when a leaf browns or yellows, it's best to clip off. I also figured out they do best when underpotted..both my Marantas are kept in the ugly, plastic 4" pots. Toni

ooook So here we go :D ive repotted it into a bigger plant pot, now ive done everything as instructed, apart from a tray wich im currently making,ive just taken off yet another yellow leave,but hopefully this will be the end of this! the plant its self still looks pretty cool and healthy! thou i have a question...if this doesnt work...could i try putting it in THE KITCHEN OR BATHROOM, my dryer was on today and it got really humid and the lil light bulp sparked up on my head...???

Niki, the bathroom would be ideal..especially if several showers are taken per day..since there are 3 ppl in my house, we all take daily showers, it gets pretty humid in there..another thing I like about placing plants in bathroom is, while I'm showering, sometimes I'll reach for plants and let water run over foliage.

As for the kitchen, the only problem is when using the oven..We don't have a microwave, so when I make a roast, etc, the oven is on for hours..gas heat dries air..It depends how your kitchen is designed..If you have a roomy kitchen, w/bright windows, Marantas will survive..I have ferns growing in my kitchen, but they are NOT placed across from oven. I do keep 3 small plants on window sill across from oven though..a traveller's palm started from seed, a begonia (bonsai) and venitian red begonia..Again, since plants are on sill sitting atop sink shelf, I hose leaves after washing dishes.
BTW, what size was maranta planted in, and what size did you transplant to? Toni

Ok so ive moved the the maranta to the bathroom.toni i think the plant came in a size 4? its been potted into somthing muchhh bigger x3 i think, it sagged for a couple of days but has sprung back into life, this all happened while yet another leave yellowed,its only been in the bathroom one full day so maybe a couple of weeks might sort it out.this is one frustrating plant!

Nlky, you repotted into a pot 3 times the size it was in before??? What size is new pot?
If you did, that's wayyy too large..(S) How much room between root ball and edges of pot? If more than 2-3" around each part of pot, it's too large..
Since roots were sticking out of drainage holes, it was potbound..so I'm thinking even though you watered, water was just barely wetting the roots..Toni

I have a different problem, same plant. Leaves are developing brown papery spots. THese begin at the margins and move inward until they take over the whole leaf. No yellowing happening, just the brown dryness. I keep the pot on wet pebbles and spritz the leaves every few days. I don't see any pests. Any advice??

The first prayer plant I had I killed by over watering. There is a fine line between too much and not enough for these plants, and they are not recommended for beginners.

Toni is right, you have over potted and now the plant could have problems from too much water. Think about it this way - the plant has a small root system, even though it was growing out of a 4 inch pot - if you put it in a pot three times that size, you have a plant with a 4 inch pot size root system now sitting in a big pot, it's roots surrounded by alot of wet soil. THe plant can only use so much of the water in that soil at a time, so it sits there staying too wet, the wetness keeps oxygen from getting thru the soil and down to the roots, it takes way too long to dry out because the water is not getting utilized by the plant....the whole soggy mess is a recipe for root rot.

When repotting a plant, you should only go up to the next size pot, in your case you should repot into a 5 or 6 inch. This is the first thing you should do. Expect the plant to take some time to recover from the trauma of being repotted twice in such a short time. Once you repot, water lightly, use your misting tray and put the plant either outside in the shade or inside in indirect light and just let it alone for a while. Check it every few days to see if it needs water by sticking your fingers at least an inch or two down into the soil and feeling for wetness. When it starts to feel on the dry side down that deep, try watering lightly again. Don't water if the soil feels at all wet, more plants are killed from over than underwatering, best to water when it feels more dry - being a bit dry for a day or so will not kill it like root rot from overwatering will.

Don't stress too much if it does not make it, it could have had issues when you got it, and this variety IS a tricky one.

First things first, thanks for all the help you have given me, this is a happy report! after moving my maranta into the bathroom sum weeks ago now... the yellowing leaves have stopped! and it sits very proudly on a shelf that sits just above the bath tub. its colour has gone dark and rich and is in top health :) so a job well done! cheers everyone!!!

Congrats, Nlky...it's always great hearing someones plant is doing well..and Marantas are NOT the easiest plant to grow..I wouldn't move it from that spot..It must like the humid conditions and whatever amount of light it's getting so it sounds happy..Toni

Nlky, your plant is beautiful..I don't think it's a Prayer plant, though it may be in the maranta, I'm more inclinded thinking it's a Calathea or Stromathe..I love its coloring..What's its height? I've never seen Maranta or relatives like the one u have...a rare find..Toni

i was in the shop today and i saw three baby ones on the display, first time i seen them anywhere for monthsss, from the top of the pot it stands up at around 33 inches.everytime i go to the garden places i always find the same type of plant but not the one i have, the other marantas they have dont have suade like leaves like my one does, nor do they have the deep colouring. wich is why i desperately wanted to save this one!!
