Knee surgery

Hi there all!

I just wanted to ask you all to keep me in your prayers tomorrow as I go for knee surgery. I've been dragging around for four months with this bum knee that has torn cartilage and is in constant pain, so I am so looking forward to working toward being pain free...at least in my knees! The procedure is suppose to be relatively short and I'm not suppose to have to use crutches, etc., so that will be a VERY good thing cause "graceful" is NOT one of my traits! Thanks for thinking of me...I'll be back online in a couple of days I hope!

faron, yes, we had a choice each time. What confused me, though, was it is not something that you can plan ahead for. It has to be a recommendation made by the doctor, while you are in the hospital. Then someone on the hospital staff makes the arrangements for you to transfer to inpatient rehab. DH is slender but he's a tall man. I don't think I could have helped adequately for those first few weeks when his mobility was greatly limited. Plus, if he had been at home, I would have had to get him to PT and it would have only been 3 times a week. With inpatient rehab, he got PT once a day and OT once a day - both giving him good, supervised exercise. I was reluctant the first time, but after seeing how difficult it was for him to get around and after seeing how much help he needed, and how much attention he got, I was eager for him to go the second time, and so was he. We have a friend who did not go to inpatient rehab, and his recovery seemed much slower than DH. Within 3 months of getting his new knee, DH was back on the golf course (with his doctor's blessing). nhb, I'm following the weather in your neck of the woods. Hope all is well with you and your DH.

babylou, I can't speak from experience, but my wife has one replaced knee, and here is her take on the matter. Pat says she can get down on her knees and work for short periods of time. She has to get down using the good knee, then kneel on a foam pad while working (she can sift weight to the good knee from time to time if necessary). Getting up is the problem, and the good knee plays a vital part in that exercise. With both knees replaced, she says it would be extremely difficult at best. HOWEVER....... comma.....there are low stools available on the market that we see lots of folks using. We drove by a friends house and saw him working in his Iris beds, sitting on a stool. Pat commented that it was the first time she had seen him using the stool. We both suspect that although it might not be as up close and personal to the job at hand, it sure beats not being able to dig in the dirt at all. I think I would opt for the awkwardness of a stool instead of living with the pain of bad knees, and having to give up the gardening you love. Just being in pain all the time would make me not want to go outside to do anything, and if the replacements can reduce/eliminate the pain, then surely you will feel more like going outside and wrestling with the stool. Thanks for checking in socks! We are at a week today since surgery and overall things are going well. She is starting to put some pressure on her foot when she walks and the incision is healing well. They warned us there would be lots of bruising and swelling but the bruising was pretty minimal and she never swelled. I did ice her the first two days home a couple of times a day though- I know that helped a lot. We are having to keep her sedated - we are alternating her pain meds and trazadone ( half the dose they sent us home with) so she doesn't get too active. Earlier this week when I kenneled her to walk Sam, she decided she didn't want to be in the kennel and while we were gone ( 15 minutes) she managed to push her kong under the mat, bend the door frame and chew through her harness in two places. Needless to say, that was when I had to commit to sedation for her own good. My hubby ( who has had several major surgeries) thinks it would be better for her anyways if this time of healing was just a blur. We did have some issues with her drinking water though- took her off of the Rimadyl at day 5 in case her kidneys were being affected ( talked with surgeon's office). I didn't want her dehydrating though so we diluted some low sodium chicken broth and she drank that right up. Her appetite is good, pee and poop look fine and tonight we just might try to see if she has graduated to the no "cone of shame" at bedtime. Lots of snuggles and even a low key game or two of find it. When her new harness arrives we might start taking her out in the front yard for sniffs and change of scenery ( lol, as long as the neighbor cats are not around).

I feel your pain. I had knee surgery last October and had to be cleared first by the Cardiologist. Went down to a week before surgery but finally got the clearance. On June 24th I was suppose to have cataract surgery. Got up at 4:30 a.m., got showered and dressed and headed to the hospital 45 minutes away. I felt fine, but apparently my heart was racing (it does that from time to time). My heart rate was 120 and my blood pressure, which has been running low, was 157/100. So they wouldn't do the surgery. I took my blood pressure and pulse every morning at the same time for two weeks and the blood pressure was low and the heart rate normal (for me) every day. I've since had an echocardiogram and have been wearing a heart monitor. I see the cardiologist August 12th and am hoping he will give the Opthamologist approval for surgery. It was so disappointing but life goes on.

I'll be praying for successful surgery and relief for your pain!

My knee has been crunching all afternoon. Could it be sympathetic crunching? (Actually, I think the treadmill had something to do with it!)

Don't try to do too much and undo the surgery!

Marlene, I'm sending prayers for a successful surgery and fast recovery. (my oldest son was back on the golf course 3 days after his was done, LOL).

Hope everything goes well and you're 'n' about in record time! Be sure to follow the doctor's orders or we'll all chastise you! And you know we will!!!

Arthroscopic Knee Surgery :

Arthroscopy is a treatment that can be used for a variety of knee joint conditions such as torn meniscus, mild arthritis, loose pieces of broken cartilage in the joint, a torn or damaged anterior or posterior cruciate ligament, inflamed or damaged synovium or misalignment of the knee cap.
The Arthroscopic Knee Surgery is operated with the help of a small camera inserted into the knee joint through a small incision and through the attached video monitor doctor is able to see inside the knee. The surgeon pulls out various tissues, a shaver to remove damaged or unwanted tissues such as torn cartilage and a burr to remove bone.
