Purple/green plant id please?

Hi all!

A week or so ago, my son brought home this plant.

It was part of a classroom mother's day project. It's fairly tall, about 13" right now. It's purple at the base, then turns to green after a couple of inches or so.

I'm just curious as to what it is, so I know how to care for it! Nobody, including my son, seems to know! :)

More than likely it's corn. Usually most classroom seeds planted are marigolds, corn or a squash of some sort. Does he remember planting a seed?

hmm, well, the only real answer that I could get from him was that it looked like a bead, charcoal helps it grown, and he suspended it in the water with four toothpicks. I can definitely see it as corn, tho! Thanks! :)

Definitely a species of Camassia aka Camas or "Wild Hyacinth" (the colloquial common name in the PNW). A mid-late spring bloomer, depending upon species to about 12 to 18 inches. Pretty hardy and trouble free. Bulbs are widely available from the major mail order bulb houses like Brent & Becky's, Van Engelen, McClure & Zimmerman and generally pretty cheap. There are other types of tibouchina that I don't think are quite as demanding, perhaps? At least mine wasn't, until I killed it by moving it in hot weather. Here's a photo of the one I had, peeking out from behind my rudbeckia triloba, though I don't know which one it is. It was really pretty. Bloomed well for me in a large container for a long time before going into the ground. Then it bloomed well there, until the fatal shovel came along! A Glad would also be a good choice, it probably wouldn't hurt to dig in the soil a bit and see if it is a bulb.

Well, I replanted it yesterday morning, and there IS indeed a bulb! So, it looks like we do have a gladiolus. Thanks all! :)
