Tonia, I have an Asparagus Fern growing similiar to yours and it does fine. The main problem is watering in winter, but I ended up placing mine in the greenhouse, this way when I water, I don't have to worry about dripping water..
Since you're in Iowa, and have to bring plant inside during winter months, how do you plan on watering?

Hi Toni! This guy actually goes in the kitchen. I put him outside every once and a while. Right now since he is still fairly small and manageable, i put him in the sink to water and leave him there to drain out a bit. When he gets bigger i'll do him in the shower or outside. He gets almost bone dry before i water again & i wasn't sure he was healthy enough, but glad to hear you say he is!
I like the looks of this planter but i am concerned about the coco liner ever rotting away or that the roots would start to grow out of its liner. Have you experienced any of this with yours?

I have quite a few different kinds of plants in coco-lined hanging baskets, and for the most part I'm pretty happy with them. The coco does break down after a few years, and I use it in the bottom of pots to keep the soil from washing out. I have hoyas and begonias and several kinds of gesneriads, and they all spend the summer outside and the winter, such as we have, in the greenhouse. I can't imagine they'd be very easy in the house--at least in my house--since they drip like crazy for quite some time after I water. I did get some clear plastic trays that were supposed to hang under them and catch the drips, but they didn't work very well.

Hi greenelbows1! Good to hear it will take a few years before i'll have to replace it! Thats a good idea to put it in the bottom of pots! I leave mine in the sink for about 1/2 hour after watering to make sure it all drips out. Guess thats the price to pay if you want one of these in the house. I couldn't imagine watering without taking it down & to the sink.....I would have a mess for sure. Maybe finding a large plant to live underneath it to catch the drips would work. I like to give the plants a shower to keep the dust off, so it doesn't bother me to have to take him down to water in the sink. Begonias would be gorgeous in one of these! For some reason my hosta doesn't grow very well. I have it in bright light, but its only grown 3 new leaves in the last year.

Even outdoors I try to put pots of plants under the baskets to catch the drips when they're not already over a clump of something in the ground. Hate to waste that water, especially if I'm fertilizing. Are you in an apartment? Hostas do fine outdoors in Iowa--I got interested in them when I lived in Nebraska. Most of them don't do well here because of our heat, and that might have something to do with why yours isn't doing as well as you'd like. They're very cold-hardy, and we don't have enough chill for most of them to rejuvinate in the winter.

Hummmmm.....I didn't realize they (hoya) have issues with heat. Thanks! I am in a mobile home, i have the AC on pretty much all summer from mid-may on as son has allergy/asthma, so hopes its not the heat. I really didn't have it in the right light before, as i was stubborn about enjoying it in a certain room. Well its hard to enjoy a plant that won't grow, so i did move it to the kitchen which has alot of light & thats when it finally grew 3 leaves in the last year. (actually the last month, maybe the furnace heat in winter keeps it from growing) It has "stubs" where it looks like it was starting new leaves but then it appears they died. The three new leaves that grew are all white. (Some one before said hoyas won't grow unless you keep cutting off the white leaves, so i cut the white one off a year ago & it never grew.) So i'll keep the white ones along with the new room with more light & wish for the best?!
I always give it 1/2 recommended MG feritlizer once a month in summer. Does it need something special for food?

I once had a hoya that did absolutely nothing for yrs..Then, I repotted, added my own soil, and it grew like crazy..It was the large-leaf hoya..In fact it grew so long, I started taking cuttings and giving to friends..
Big mistake..I read hoyas shouldn't be pruned..you might cut the flower stem therefore it won't bloom. Since then, I never cut my hoyas, no matter how large they grow.
Some hoyas are slow-growing despite light. I bought a couple last yr and they're not doing much of anything..
I think it's time for food..
Remember, hoyas slow dow in growth during winter months, so don't expect much..but they should send out new growth in spring/summer..Toni

Oh dear, I'm sorry I mislead you about your hoya. Thought you said 'hosta'! Well, actually, you did, but I guess it was a typo. Easy to do! I had a few hoyas that didn't bloom for quite awhile, but I think I was under-watering them. Still have only one that really blooms well, but I'll get the others going too (it says here!) I keep learning!

Oh Gosh Greenelbows!! Thats funny! I just now realized that you had written "Hosta" in your post earlier! Well, now i know how to take care of hostas too! LOL! Not bad for one day! Thanks!

Hi Toni! Thank you for the Hoya tips! Mine is 6 years old this year, grown from a leaf cutting. (i had some one tell me this isn't possible with hoya, but thats what it grew from, a leaf i cut from my x-boyfriends plant)
As you can see from the pic, its real small. Its in a 5" wide by 4" tall pot. Maybe it would like a bigger pot?! (LOL) I just figured i'd put him in a bigger one after he got bigger.....ahhhh....maybe i'm really REALLY wrong about that. I guess i better buy a bigger one & give it a whirl.

Tonia, your hoya is gorgeous..I love its colors. Why would someone tell you a hoya can't be rooted from a cutting???

I wouldn't repot just yet..5" is a pretty good size for your plant. It seems hoyas like to be a bit rootbound, especially if you'd like it to flower. I'd let it fill out more, then when it's rootbound would I place in a larger pot, 1-2 sizes bigger than the pot it's in.
Which direction window is it in? Seems to be getting appropriate lighting. Toni
