We arrived last night, nice flight all the way thru.

Slept good because I was tired but woke up too early.

My husband who is a very early riser decided he would go check out the distance from St. Mary's Hospital to Mayo Clinic.

He came back and told me it was a nice walk.

Well by the time I got ready it was around 2 PM.

So out I went......

In one short block

I turned into a popsicle,

I had hat coat,socks, sweater, scarf hood glove I told my husband no more waling,bus rides we are taking taxi.

The hotel we are staying in is not luxorius but very family friendly they have computer internet access and their own computers we can use

But then I started thinking maybe while I was a popsicle it froze my cancer away! Con el favor de Dios.

Glad you made it safe and sound...Your hotel sounds nice..I'd rather stay at one like that where people are nice, then a posh one where they aren't...Take care and keep warm...

I am so glad that you have arrived safe and sound. I am also glad that you have found a comfortable place to stay while you are there. I will be thinking of you and praying for you. Don't turn into a popsicle while you are there. I am sure that the weather change is extreme from what you are used to in southern California. Stay warm and hopefully you will get some time to get out and enjoy yourself before you go in for the surgery.

There has been a new plum tree called BlackIce developed by the UW-River Falls that is supposed to be as good as the California plums. This year it is now available to the public and can be purchased from Jungs Nursery. I have ordered one, since I only live 15 miles from River Falls, so assume it would do well here. Also the new honeyberries known as haskaps that have been developed in Saskatchewan are available in the U.S. for the first time this year. See my post from a few days back. They are supposed to be much better than the honeyberries previously available in the U.S. There are also some bush cherries known as the Romance Series developed at Saskatchewan that are highly touted. Only Carmen Jewel is available in the U.S. so far; and St.Lawrence Nursery in Potsdam, New York, had Crimson Passion for a couple years, but no longer. I am hoping more of the half dozen varieties available only in Canada will soon be available here. These should all be quite hardy where you are; and the honeyberries and bush cherries are supposed to be fairly low maintenance. New introductions don't always pan out to what they are cracked up to be, but the Canadian gardeners have given them good reviews on the forums. The haskaps would ripen at a time before most other fruits, which is another bonus, and when the other bush cherries become available, they have staggered ripening times for different varieties, too. You won't want to be tied down to an extensive spraying program and spending your whole time canning and freezing when you retire, so with low maintenance items, if you are gone on a trip or experiencing health problems, you can just tell a friend or relative to pick the fruit, but they won't care to do any spraying, pruning, or weeding. Also, with bushes you won't have to contend with ladders when you are old and your knees get decrepit. I can't imagine how retirees could eat 50 trees worth of apples, either, unless you will have lots of grandkids around or plan to sell them. I would go for zone 3 blueberries if I were you, like Chippewa, Polaris, or St. Cloud. That is smart of you to prepare the soil in advance. There are pears that should grow fine where you are, too, but it can be a long wait for the tree to mature. I have Summercrisp, Flemish Beauty, Clapp's Favorite, and Luscious, but none have fruited yet. Summercrisp is supposed to be entirely free of fireblight, very early, and quite hardy. I am also growing lingonberries, as they are very good for you, plus are a nice ground cover and can take a little afternoon shade. Your van cherries might be questionable. You might even be on the fringe of where montmorency will fruit consistently. If I were you, I would try just one of each to start with. I have a Lapins going on its third year now and figure if I get fruit even every third year I will be thrilled. Have also ordered a Kristin, which is supposedly hardier than the other varieties of sweet cherries. Also, avoid dwarf trees this far north, as they aren't as hardy. Semidwarf is okay for apples, but otherwise standard are recommended. With all the space you have, you might experiment with a couple apricots. Westcot, Jerseycot (if you can find one), Sugar Pearl might fruit for you at least some years. And of couse, there are the old standbys of strawberries and raspberries, which will give you fruit the first year. Don't forget to fence against the deer and rabbits, and net against the birds, which can cost more than purchasing the trees. Best wishes with your fruit adventures. Northwoodswis

Where I live, the average is a mere 32 inches or so. This year, we ended up with 42 inches. Plus, it's cooler here than say, Oklahoma, although it can get hot. The weirdest thing is how dry this winter has been so far. By this time last year, and the year before for that matter, we were running out of places to pile snow. One of my kids moved to Olympia, WA recently. That locale seems to be getting plenty of moisture lately! I think 'effective precipitation' is really the key, as others have already pointed out. Overall, I think we're seeing fewer "three day rains", where it comes down slowly but for a long time. It's all big downpours now, with the accompanying runoff. But with this current drought, gotta wonder where we're headed for the next growing season. +oM

Hi Melissa! By Saturday evening, we only had about 2 1/2 inches, but by Sunday morning, the rain gauge had overflowed! And I'm pretty sure that if I'd been able to have dumped it when it got full, it would have filled up again. Then another 3/4 inch on Sunday.... Our next door neighbor has rolls of carpet out on the driveway, and several people I work with in Rochester had flooded basements. We got lucky... kinda... well, actually we just got it out of the way 3-4 years earlier. Our entire basement flooded that year, on Memorial day, and we ripped out shrubs, tiled the west side, and put in new gutters and a new heavy duty sump pump. So, this time we did have a little water come in the bathroom window, but it barely got the edge of the hallway carpet at the bathroom door wet. The Red Cross was going door to door to assess damages yesterday. It's been quite an experience. And I know what you mean about hostas to go in the ground. Actually, I've just made the deal to buy a house in Rochester, and I've got pots of hostas that I've been putting off planting because I knew I'd be having a new place to plant them.

So glad you had a safe trip & found your hotel & the clinic. According to the paper it has warmed up quite a lot!!!Looked like low 30's- almost like summer!!LOL I'll guess Kirk bought the long johns after some time shoveling off the roof-wind just goes right through you. Glad you brought all your warm stuff with you Sylvia, amazing how cold you can feel tho!! Sometimes in early morning it felt so good to have that cold air on your face, really wakes you up & gets you moving fast!! This is God's way of making you appreciate your Ca. home!! It's going to be so sweet when you get back!! Hugs & prayers for good results on the tests & the surgery will soon be over. I like to read in the Bible night before surgery, just open & start reading, amazing how the passage always seems to be of encouragement ! Get lots of sleep too as it is a big difference in temp. & takes some adjusting. Jan

LOL about the cold up there ... I had never experienced REAL cold until I visited Minn in January. Makes it seem just chilly here in Tenn, even though it gets plenty cold at times. It was down to 7F a couple of weeks ago during a cold spell, but it's still not as bitter as the north, never lasts too long. This week it's like spring, I'm soooo looking forward to it!

So glad to know you've arrived safely. It's going to be a very busy week starting tomorrow, and they're gonna take extra special good care of you! You are in good hands!

I think God sent some warmer temperatures to the Midwest for you Sylvia! It actually feels like spring is in the air around here. But when you aren't used to it, the 30s can seem awfully cold. I hope all goes well at the hospital and you are back home in the California sunshine in perfect health very soon!

nanagrandma...Sylvia...so wonderful to hear from you and know you are safe and sound in Rochester. St. Mary's drs. & staff will take good care of you...so turn it over now (as you have been), relax (as you are continuing to do), lean on your family (who sound so wonderful!) and God will be watching over you all, I am positive!

Hi Sylvia!

Glad to hear that you are all settled in. The cold must be shocking to someone not accustomed to it. I hope that you get a thaw like the one we are getting (finally!) here in Ohio. A little respite before it gets frigid again!

I just thought I'd let you know what my DH and two oldest boys did in January. They are all Scouters. In fact DH is the Scout Master and #2 son is the Senior Patrol Leader for our Boy Scout troop. Well these lunatics went CAMPING! The whole troop drove through the snow storm to get to the southern Ohio hills and set up camp. Everyone slept warm in tents except for my eldest. He wanted to top the troop record for "freeze" camping. That is sleeping under the stars with no tent. Well, HE DID! I reached -9 degrees that night! This just goes to prove two things that I solemnly believe. #1-CAMP is a four letter word and #2, boys are stupid. Throw rocks at them!!!!!!!

If further proof is needed, they have another camp out planned in two weeks. It is the "Freeze Campout", an annual event where they ALL sleep without tents in the cold. They cancel for only ONE reason, if the temps go above freezing!! See, testosterone does cause insanity! I know it has for me. All of those six boys (counting DH)drive me crazy!

I'm glad that you're sleeping warmly. You continue in my thoughts and prayers.

If she needs a shot of testosterone Sylvia could just breath the air in my house! I always say there's so much in the air that I have to check myself for chest hair! It's GOT to have some effect when breathed day in and day out.
