What china and other kitchenware do you collect ?

Luvstocraft was showing us some of her lovely rose patterned china. I thought it'd be interesting to see what other GJers collect in their kitchen ... dishes, flatware, glassware, etc.

The china I collect is Jadeite, and also Homer Laughlin's Jubilee. Both were produced in the 1930's thru 1960's time zone approximately. Laughlin created Fiesta, and Jubilee is similar to that, but the 4 interchangeable colors are Celadon Green, Mist Gray, Shell Pink and Cream Beige, and the plates are a bit thinner which I like for serving. I love being able to mix the colors, or do all green, all gray, all pink, or all beige!

I also collect old peanut butter glass, the Hazel Atlas clear type, and Swanky Swig glasses, which is the painted glass that Velveeta, jelly or peanut butter came in back in the 1930's thru the 1950's.

Last but not least, I collect Watt Ware. I have 7 pieces, 5 inherited pieces and 2 pieces from my best friend. Dairy products used to come in these beautiful yellow ware bowls. They are the beige bowls that usually have a deep red apple with a couple of green leaves painted on as the decoration.

Once upon a time, our groceries came in something besides plastic. Amazing that these old pieces are still with us! I'll try to get some photos up of these things soon! Show us your collections! ~tenderlee

I guess that is something I havent photograghed! I love hand painted BRIGHT colored bowls and dishes, I also adore FloBlue or any old Blue dishes.And since my 10 year old grandson saw an Old episode of Daniel Boone using Willow ware in his cabin I have picked up a few of those pieces.My Babushka(Grandma) had it but I do not know where it went.
I love egg cups and mugs or sugars that have FACES on them I have a dream of making a small garden junk wall in a circle with pottery pieces blue bottles and ALL these cute faces peaking out!

I have several milk glass pieces that I've turned into totems. I did set a few pieces for household use.

Well... I also used to collect beanie babies, big time. They are now mostly in several large rubbermaid tubs, stuffed in a back closet. I do get out some of the holiday ones... I keep those handy. I use the Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas ones every year. I also collect something called "Rocky Mountain Pottery," also called ROMCO. This collection started by accident, when my in-laws got me a few pieces for Christmas about 2 years ago. I fell in love with it, and have significantly expanded my collection since then, both through buying pieces for myself and getting them as gifts from family. I only get the pieces with the pine cone pattern. This pottery was made in Loveland, Colorado, back in the 1960's through the 1980's, I think. The factory no longer exists so 99% of my collection has come from ebay. Here are a couple of pics I took last year when this subject came up here at the GW... Coincidentally, they are decorated for Halloween... This pottery goes really well in my house... hubby and I try to maintain a sort of rustic style and the pine cones fit in perfectly. Which brings me to my next collection... we collect "primitives" such as an old wood butter churn, wood buckets, old wash stand, old lanterns, etc. We also collect ceramic black bears from a place called Pigeon River Pottery, in Pigeon Forge, Tenessee. If you look very closely, you can see them on the top, right shelf in my first picture above. We bought the first bear when we were on our honeymoon, and have bought a bear each year for our anniversary. So we only have 4 for now, and hopefully they keep making them. We have decorated our kitchen in a black bear theme, which also goes with our whole rustic, lodge theme we have going. My husband has a fantastic collection of vintage baseball memorabelia. Everything from bobblehead dolls, to very old ball gloves (the kind with individual fingers), old cleats, magazines, puzzles, bats, catchers mask, baseball with red and blue thread, etc. Most everything is from 1960's or earlier. All his stuff decorates our office, so I am staring at all of it right now. In our next house, he plans to decorate the entire basement with his baseball stuff. He already has a bunch of stuff that he is storing to get ready for our basement someday... That's all I can think of for now... Buff

I do give away the common whites/yellows or the varieties that have been given to me, but I have other varieties (Gulf Stream, Hilo Beauty, Moragne #23, Vera Cruz Rose, Cancun Pink, Pu'u Kahea, Brea (not well known, from Jack Morgan), Kamiyama Rainbow, Plastic Pink, Nebel's Rainbow and on and on and on....) that I paid for as cuttings from mostly reputable and a few shady places. I run up quite the bill every spring with new plants and all the fertilizers that the plants need...DH hasn't said anything yet, but if our roles were reversed I would put the kibosh to the plumeria habit if I saw the bills coming in and stuff going out for free! Fortunately I sold a few bigger trees and that gave me the go ahead to bring in some more cuttings. :-) chuy,email me and let me know what you're looking for, I'm in North OC.

I've collected many things over the years. I've sold collections in order to make room for new collections. Both my DH & I love glass so it was a natural fit for collecting. We have several areas of interest including 17th & 18th century wine glasses (including flips) and decanters. We've also put together a rather large collection of 19th century barber bottles. I love the colors & decorations of these bottles. Our sunroom has exposed ceiling beams & the barber bottles sit on those beams where they catch the light from the paladium windows. They cast rainbows all over the room on a sunny day in late afternoon. They are stuck up there with museum gel. My favorite pieces of glass though are our "fire bombs". These are little, squat glass orbs (about 8" tall) with molded "legs" of sorts so they sit flat. They are filled with chemicals to extinguish a fire. Most kitchens had cases of these glass "fire bombs". If there was kitchen fire...you would throw one or two of these "bombs" at the fire to put it out. But, because of their nature there arent' too many of them still around. We've got fire bombs made from amber, amethyst, clear, cobalt, & a few different shades of green glass. To go along with them, we've collected late 18th & early 19th century leather fire buckets. These buckets have a fun history. In colonial New England, when there was a fire...everybody was expected to help put it out. Households had these leather fire buckets that held water. People would form a line from a water source to the fire & pass these buckets along the line with the last person tossing the water on the fire. After the fire was extinguished, people would toss their buckets into a big pile near the fire. Then, the town tax collector would go through the pile of buckets and return them. If you didn't have a representative bucket from your household...you were fined by the tax collector. For this reason, many of these old leather buckets have family names on them. My collection started when I found one in Exeter, NH with my family's name on it. My family was prominent in Exeter from the 2nd quarter of the 17th century (c. 1639-Revolutionary War) & I'm an amateur genealogist. So, this was an extraordinary find, for me. There is a garrison home still standing in Exeter that one of my ancestral grandfathers built c. 1690. It's a museum now. Anyway, someday, I will donate my fire bucket to this musuem since it bears the family name. So, there's so many ways collections can start & they can be literally anything that catches your interest. And, they don't need to be permanent. You can sell off one & start another when you either lose interest or run out of space. I tried to find a picture of a fire bomb on the Internet to attach but couldn't locate one...but here's a common barber bottle being offered on Ebay. Ah, lynn, thanks--but it's family only :) Seriously, I do know someone whose mom was extremely into spinning/knitting and she made a sweater out of their collie's fur. WAY too hot to wear, but fascinating. I'm thinking a scarf? It's so soft. And justgotabme, we have three cats but only one really sheds visibly and collectably. Even though he's a shorthair. He seems to have a very thick coat and I comb him to keep him from getting hairballs--and just think it's a waste of -- something -- to throw the fur away. I'm sure I could wash it too. They're really soft felt-feeling little balls. Maybe a pillow, but then the softness would be lost. There are lots of things to do with lint--wish I could remember any of them! But it's basically clothing-grade fiber...I'm not as attached to it as I am to the cats' fur, so we put it outside for birds, pretty much.

I started a collection of amethyst glass in the 60's. Anything that color was very had to find at that time.
Now you see it more often.
I have a few Jadeite pieces, a little bit of Fire King, some coca-cola dishes and other coke things.
Before that I mostly collected elephants (over a 1000 when I stopped counting) and JUNK.

I love Fiesta. I remember eating off my grandma's fiesta but now they say it's not safe. So when they came out with the new safer stuff, I started to buy it. I use it as my everyday and good dishes. My daughter buys me a piece or two for me for christmas. So I guess I'm gonna have to 'will' the old fiesta to my son and the newer fiesta to my daughter. It only seems right since she's the one that bought alot of the pieces. (lol)

Here is a picture of my Christmas Supper this year. The dishes are from JC Pennys - International Bazzar. I liked them because of the bird pattern. I mixed them with my Lennox Solataire China.

Wow! You ladies sure have some pretty dishes. If you love dishes, you really need to come play once in awhile on the Holiday forum. Lots of dishaholics there and for holidays and in between, we do tablescapes, show pictures of our purchases whether from stores, TS, YS, ES, or whatever. All the ladies there would be thrilled to see your pretty dishes.

Tenderlee, you need to show us pictures of your pretty dishes, they all sound nice.

Susiewantsroses, I absolutely love your Christmas dishes! The holly and berries are so pretty, but the birds are just a wonderful addition. And the charger you used is gorgeous! Where did you find those if I may ask? Your toile is nice, but I really love the one with the blue roses all over it. Yummy!

Mary, bless you for not breaking those pretty rose plates! I just can't bear to think of anyone breaking something that pretty--there are plenty of chipped and broken ones that could be used for mosaics I think. Your blue and white looks so pretty in your china cabinet too.

Mom of 6: in your first picture, the dish on the upper right corner. Is that a Moss Rose patteren? It is a gorgeous piece.
I collect the Moss Rose china pattern, esp. cups & saucers.

Well the china I collected is John Haviland/Bavaria called Blue Garland. I now have a complete service for 8. Other than that I collect cobalt glass and have quite a bit of it.

Blue Willow, pink depression glass and I have an entire set of reproduction pink that they sold at TG&Y in the early 80s. The Amethyst reproduction that WalMart sold a few years back, clear WhiteHall glasses, enamal ware, especially lids and I use those to decorate the walls. I hang them with industrial strength Velcro, and I slip a nice dish towel( I collect those,too) into the lid handle. I have a yellow enamal ladle I made a floral arrangement and candle in the bowl of and it's hanging from a lid handle. Other enamal and granite and spatterware..some chamber pots on the front porch, a camping set for my laundry room. Old cooking utensils and cookware, I like the yellow, or green or red painted handles. Rolling pins and other long wooden things such as a sausage stuffer Twin gave me,fruit and vegetable crate labels,tins,cookbooks...all that is for the kitchen...there's more I just can't think right now mason jars are another thing..

I love all your posts! Thanks! I promise to try to get a few pics made and posted soon. Not enough time in the day, plus my dishes have been moved around, since my dining room recently became a bedroom while my DD, SIL & GSs are staying temporarily. My dining table is being stored in the basement right now. Might just have to make the pics in a more unflattering setting, but you would see my collections anyway. More later! ~tenderlee

This antique Homer Laughlin octagonal covered casserole vegetable dish/serving bowl has been a part of our Lancaster County family celebrations over the years. Approximately 113 years and still perfect.
