Don't use 100% grass clippings. If they get too wet, you get a slimy mess.

Hi gardengrl and welcome to NoVa! I'm also in the area (Alexandria) and just got started with wintersowing in the past couple of weeks. I started gardening a few years ago and have had good luck starting seedlings in my basement under grow lights but wintersowing sounds so miraculous that I had to try it too. So far I've done lettuce, spinach, chard, cilantro, parsley, and sweet peas. I picked things that I've had luck with in the early spring (mid-Feb and on) in past years with our normal, warmer winters. These are things that don't survive in the heat of summer so I'm hoping winter sowing gives them an early start. It's a complete experiment this year! I found a list of what to start when on the blog "A Garden for the House" from NY state and sort of figured everything here could start a bit earlier. Can't wait for warmer weather to see if my milk jugs start sprouting. This winter has been so abnormally cold that my normal winter crop of red Russian kale and arugula under hoops was killed off, so I am itching to start gardening soon and have some good salads. Totally envy your 4 acres from my little, inside the beltway yard!

Welcome to the forum!! Always nice to have another person from TN!! Personally I would wait another week. Digging them this early would cause the leaves to be really brown by the time of the sale. Unless you left the fans really long and then went back and recut them. It would hurt them as far as them living but I would be more worried about how they would look to potential buyers. littlebit

I grow Oregon Sugar Pod II. They reach a height of about 3 feet in my garden. I prefer to let them climb a trellis even though the seed catalog I ordered them from says that trellising is optional. For me, it is simply a matter of convenience and aesthetics. I don't think there are any precise rules about sowing a second crop other than to consider that your existing vines may give you two or three flushes of peas, which will probably vary depending on variety and environmental conditions. Peas don't like real hot weather so be mindful of that as you approach your summer season in WA. I'd probably have my second crop started no later than when I saw the very first signs of flowers on the first crop but that is just my opinion having only grown the Oregon Sugar Pod II variety.
