Awesome! Way to go. You definitely add a dimension to container gardening. My 'big' plants are much smaller, blueberries, and grow in 20-inch and 24-inch diameter containers. Black currants also grow in that size container. The winters are a bit colder here and I'm reluctant to try my Rose of Sharon in a container -- but it's tempting. Perennial hibiscus also grown in a 24-inch diameter container. Your trees rock!

I put one of these pots in the top of a mason jar, and put a tea light candle in it. You can paint the jar (inside)and pot to match with any design or technique, tie a ribbon to coordinate on the jar rim..makes a cute gift...or can use them as table favors/name cards (make a paper name tag, punch hole and tie ribbon through it). They also look cute filled with sea shells, cranberries, shelled nuts, popcorn, split peas..well you get the idea. Cheap, fast, and practical. Great bazaar seller. Woodsy

I've been lurking... This rose and clematis thing has been confusing me. This is my first year with both. I planted climbing rose bushes this year - a white and a red variety. I was told to water, water, water the first year. But, I just planted a Romantika clematis there too, and I'm going to move it. I'm afraid all the water is going to cause root rot. You want to be careful not to overwater clematis for this reason. I read, with my delivery of my clematis from Silver Star Vinery, that you water, then let the soil dry up a bit (not totally dry of course), then water again. No daily watering. Of course, this is when it is planted in the ground and not in a pot. It seems to me that planting these together, other than aesthetically speaking, is hardly compatible given that the water needs are so different. Also, with regard to the fertilizing...I don't know if this is your first year clem, but I was also told NOT to fertilize the first year, except maybe at planting time to promote root growth, but it depends on who you talk to. I also read that fertilizing established clems can shorten the bloom time - again, same information from Silver Star Vinery (I believe it was them - I ordered from several different companies this year), and they recommend to fertilize maybe at the beginning of the growing season. Some of my clems were planted in early February and didn't show much growth until early summer, as I'd expected. Of the clems that I planted recently, they are also slow to show any growth, which I think is better because I'm assuming the roots are taking time to establish themselves.

you arent focusing .... cold is not really the primary issue ... as smiv said.. its about whether it is ready for the cold ... is the sunroom heated??? .. on sunny winter days.. how hot does it get ... imo.. its more about that.. rather than how cold on cloudy days ... the trick with plants that need dormancy ... it to get them dormant.. and keep them dormant.. one might say.. get them cold.. and keep them cold ... when over the dormancy period.. they go in and out of dormancy.. the odds of failure go up significantly .... i would start letting it get drier ... wet cold roots can also be a problem ... how big is that pot???? z5 is half the US.. give us a big city name .... ken
