How much do your fake rocks weigh?

During the last year I have seen many photos of wonderful fake rocks made by people on this forum. I would love to know how much they weigh. (even approximately). Please also give approximate measurements for length-width-height. It would also be nice to know if they are hypertufa or concrete.

I want to make some nice big rocks for my yard/garden. I want them to be lightweight enough for me to move by myself but I wonder what the "norm" is for fake rocks.

Hi Laura,

I think you can probably get away with just using diamond mesh (stucco lath), depending on how big "big" is. If you're talking really big then you're going to need some rebar, but for garden size, at least to me, it sounds reasonable to do without it. I'd make your mesh armature, jam the inside full of scrap paper, and then apply your tufa layers.

I've made some fake rock fountains and all I can say is that they are heavy. A plain rock should be a lot lighter, since the basic shape of the armature is very close to the end product.

I know how the memory fails after being in the garden for, well, just within minutes usually for me.
The two fake rocks that I made are placed in spots that should not require me to stand on them. And they are only made with chicken wire, it was what I had close at hand. The rocks are about 24"long x 14" high and 14-16" wide. They are a fairly thin shell hmm say about 1- 1 1/2" thick. They are not going to walk away easily, but on a good gardening day I can lift each seperately. Weight is about 20lbs. It is not the weight that is the biggest problem but how cumbersome they are. My arms only stretch to 5-4", and then I could not see to put one foot in front of the other. Placing into a wheelbarrow would be my option. Now about whether I can stand on them, yes in fact I moved one of them after the tree feller jumped the fence and landed on one. I was worried the rock would break! it did not break. One quick note the large gunnera cast that I moved to soft gound for fear a branch would come down, did break with the movement of the tree hitting the ground. Now I have two relic pieces as back drops.
I do however totally agree with Justin that diamond mesh is the way to go, you could go pretty big without the rebar too.

Using the Search feature in the top right corner and typing in "ROCKs" might be of help, esp. if you are looking to buy some (so to get some Ideas). I'm going to guess and say that rock, when dense, is close to the weight of concrete; Concrete weighs around 140 lbs / cubic ft., so a little less than that is probably where you're at. Most garden or rock yards that deal in large rocks and boulders will expect to have to deliver (you might pay a delivery charge), but they usually have a wheeled loader, like a forklift, moffitt forklift, or a piggyback lift. If you pay them to get it to your neighborhood, they can probably place if for you if you have clear access for them.

all the varied rose prices are making me nuts. I see one deal then another and never know where to stop! Well back in the bare root season I bought 2 expensive roses in peat pots. They were about $22 each. Black Baccart & PJP II. I got those planted nice and early and they are two of my nicest roses. That same darn nursery keeps knocking down the prices on those peat pots. First to $9.99 so I got Candyland climber, rock N' roll, and mardi gras. the candyland is going gangbusters and the other 2 are starting to fill out. Now they dropped the prices on those peat pots to $5 with some giant plants in them. I picked up an iceberg this week. And I'm not sure if I can resist the Dreamweaver climber they had. Of course I have also picked up cheap $6 container roses at Lowe's (which grow really well!) and a bunch of body bags I bought at HD (not that great really...). boy you can spend almost anything on these roses. Of course our local nursery has rows & rows of gorgeous giant container roses. My favorite "break" is to take a cup of coffee and wander through their roses. I haven't been brave enough to buy one but I find a new favorite there all the time. Diana Princess of Whales was sooo tempting today. ok way too long of an answer! gbebeh (with wayy too much shopping in San Diego)

doesn't it seem like a significant brix difference would indicate a soil difference? Maybe. Or it can mean that you've got a localized infestation of nematodes left over in one spot from last year's crop or even weeds. (and only the root knot can be spotted without lab testing and sometimes, not even them) If you've got sting nematodes or one of the other plant pathogenic species, you may not know and they can all infest fields in patches. Or it can be due to differences in drainage characteristics, which can vary depending on things like foot and vehicle traffic, even assuming that the soil type is perfectly uniform. Or microclimates may affect plant development. Like if you've got a prevailing wind from the north and the north row takes the the brunt of cold breezes and sustains some cold damage while protecting the south row, resulting in decreased ability to photosynthesize and produce sugars. or.... I suppose it's better than nothing but if the primary purpose is to evaluate soil fertility, I would be very hesitant to draw any conclusions, even tentative ones, based on something that doesn't measure soil fertility. As far as having time to test the soil, you just have to grab a little dirt on the same day that you're planting and send it in. That would give you a good a good base line. A couple more samples down the road and you just might have something. The cost can be an issue but a lot of labs can give you some numbers for pretty cheap. You would just want to make sure you're choosing the right methods for your soil. (I can help you determine the correct methods if you like)

You, too, and good luck with your project. I've certainly thought about soil testing, and have always been stymied by not knowing who could do it. And the answer is idiotically simple: go to our local nursery and ask. Instead I'd rather do it the hard way (and it is hard). I never claimed to be a smart gardener. About my soil amending and fertilizing practices: I was much influenced by a book, 'Teaming with Microbes', that was recommended to me by my horticulturalist sister. Basically it talked about the importance of establishing a thriving soil microlife that then nourishes the garden plants. The gardener establishes a virtuous (as opposed to vicious) cycle in which the microlife supplies nutrients to the plants, which grow, die, and the detritus of which feeds the soil microorganisms which recycle the nutrients. Getting the process started is the hard part, in land like ours which is poor in organic matter--hence all the holes and amending--but which, once the cycle gets going well, can pretty much be left to itself. We have so much land to turn into garden that the work is enormous. But I look out my living room window right now at the garden outside (it used to be the farm courtyard), and I think, this works. I don't fertilize my two-story tall 'Jaune Desprez', the substantial shrubs of pittosporum, sarcococca, myrtle, the hardy palms and Tea roses. The bed gets pruning clippings and plant debris, and everything grows fine. Of course we have our clay soil. But if you look at Florida, for example, much of it has very poor sandy soil. And yet jungles grow there. The nutrition isn't coming from the mineral-rich soil, and not from any added fertilizer. It's due to the recycling of nutrients.

Thanks for the responses. 20 lb rocks sound good. I think the biggest one I made weighs 50 pounds. I know what you mean, Dena, about the fact they are cumbersome to move - makes them seem like they weigh a lot more than they do. I just had to go measure how far I could reach. outstretched fingertip to fingertip I can reach 73 inches. You would think I could pick up a big rock....

So many people recommend that expanded metal lath that I will have to try it soon. I have seen it at the store and it looks lethal but surely I could learn how to use it.

No - I am 5 ' 8". This explains why no sleeve has ever been long enough on any garment all my life! They aren't even close.
I did the math thing wrong too. At first I thought you had a 54 inch reach instead of a 5' 4" reach. At least we still catch our math mistakes - or do we?
