Butternut Squash - No Bugs Allowed??

I have an odd question for you expert gardeners. This summer I have a 4x8 bed filled with sprawling watermelon vines. I believe I've gotten what I'm going to out of them and it's time to pull them. I had a run with the squash bugs on those plants, but I wouldn't call it a complete infestation and lately I have only been seeing a bug or two every few days. I want to plant butternut squash after I pull up the watermelon and I've read butternuts are resistant to squash bugs.

My question is this: If there are already squash bugs in the area where I'm planting, will they still eat the butternut squash? Or do they dislike it so much that they will leave it alone?
