Finally got some fruit trees, bushes, plants

Like much of the Midwest, we have had rain, more rain, and still more rain. Thankfully, some of the soil in my yard drains extremely well and is very black earth, so it doesn't have to be extremely dry.

I ordered everything from Raintree Nursery and am quite pleased with the plants. The cherry trees, Montmorency and Vandalay, are at least 3' tall above the graft. Also, got 150 TriStar strawberries, three Triple Crown blackberries and they gave me five Caroline Raspberries free. Didn't get but 20 of the strawberries planted - the place where they go does not drain as well and has some clay in it - it is now covered with plastic for the weekend rains. But the other berries are in the dirt and hopefully spreading their roots!

In fact, I had a dream where I went out to the area where they are growing and one plant already had about six large, nearly ripe strawberries.

Yes. Get them in the ground and start the count down until you get fruit.

I'm very lucky. We have a tree grower in VA that sells them through our local COOP. The fruit trres are 6 to 7 feet tall for $26. They produce fruit the same year I plant sometimes.

I've ordered from them many times over the last 20+ years. They are a great nursery for pecan trees. Prices have gone up quite a bit the last few years, but are still cheaper than the box stores, even with the shipping.

I'm in Rocky Mountain foothill Z5a, which would be pretty different from Midwest 5. My hit list: "Glenora" grape. The only thing fruiting this year after the terrible cold snap of early February. Produces second-rate fruit for a couple of years before it gets going. "Polly" white peach. Cold snap killed the blossoms this year, but otherwise its in fine shape. Its available as a special order from Bay Laurel Nursery. It was slow to come into production, but faultless once it did. "Redhaven" yellow peach. A little marginal for my area, but it seems to almost have a will to produce fruit for you. Its widely available, and very high quality. I am pretty sure you can get one and plant it this weekend. "Rosy Gage" plum is shaping up to be a VERY good plum. A little shy bearing so far, but its still a new plum, and I had pollination issues to solve. I have an idea once it hits maturity it will produce well in a good year. Pollination is an issue with Euro plums more than other trees. You have to make sure you have the right combination. "Castleton Plum?" My fall planted [a mistake in z5] "Castleton" died in the Big Freeze of course. I'm not terribly satisfied with the pollinators I have for "Rosy Gage" I would double check to make sure it cross-pollinates with "Rosy Gage" If it does I would go for it. This is in the realm of speculation and reputation rather than experience, however. Apricots: If you live in an area where you can even occasionally get a crop, you should grow an adapted apricot. There is just no comparison to a store-bought apricot. None. Furthermore, apricots if it grows well in your area are extraordinarily attractive trees that deserve a high-profile spot in your landscape. I like the taste of Wilson Delicious from Stark's best of all. 'Moorpark' works OK too. But as I mentioned, in my area the crop is an afterthought. Sorry, not enough luck with apples or pears to make a recommendation. As I mentioned, if you live Back East, these recommendations don't mean much.

Thank you Sherry and Betty! Sherry, I'll keep a close eye out for eggs! Betty, those butterfly stakes came from the dollar store and they were even having a sale on the lawn decor! They were a dollar a piece and with the sale, they were 75 cents a piece! The rocks are a rockpile down at the creek. I did have rocks around the plants before the fencing went in. The ground here is very rocky, which is a little hard to dig. Don't worry, I will post pictures when it's all done! All the plants I will be putting in were winter sown :) . I just planted my WS'd butterfly weed and rattlesnake master in a bushel planter (also from the dollar store but a different one from where I got the butterfly stakes) yesterday evening. Winter sowing is lots of fun! I will do it again this year and I told everyone it's a good way to beat the winter blues! The butterfly bush smells great! It needs a little pruning but that will be done after we plant it this evening when it's cooler. Brad AKA Moonwolf

Are you lucky! I paid that much for my trees, more if you count shipping. But they are on Gisela5 rootstock, one reason they were more than double the cost at other on-line stores. Plus, they were 5-6 feet tall plants (roots and all) instead of 2-3' ones. But I don't see me getting any ripe cherries this year. (Alas!)
