Cayenne Pepper
Comments (3)I have sprayed a cayenne/water mix on plants to keep squirrels from eating them and it worked well. The key for spraying is you have to steep it in a pot on the stove and then strain the liquid or it will clog your sprayer. It will not damage your plants though they may be pretty spicy if you miss some in the wash. If rabbits are a regular problem I would put a fence up. It does have to be very high to keep them out. Chicken wire or picket fences are pretty inexpensive as well. _____________________________________________ Check out my veggie garden blog: http://veggiegardenblog.blogspot.com/...See MoreKeeping rabbits away

Comments (17)It is not the most savory option but human urine is a good deterrant. I have found you do not have to put on the plants but sprinkle in a perimeter around the plants. If the males in your house have good aim and you live in a seculed area, send them out at night! :) The downside is repeated application which, as the gentleman noted above, is going to be the downside with anything but a fence. I have heard the human hair option works but have never tried it myself. My father in law puts aluminum pie pans on a pole to act as an inexpensive noise maker--they make a lot of noise when they rattle together but if there is no wind, or your garden is outside the bedroom window, this may not work. You may need to try a combo of methods--that's what I did (urine around plants, pepper spray on plants, noise makers and I trellised as many plants as I possibly could) and I think I have finally gotten rid of my critters!...See MoreSquirrel Away
Comments (9)The product called 'Squirrel Away' is a very hot red pepper powder sold to deter squirrels when mixed with bird seed. I had a feeding system for my fantailed pigeons that I could fill from outside the cage, but rats were getting into it. At first using Squirrel Away kept the rats out, but they became used to it no matter how much I sprinkled in with the pigeon feed so I had to move the feeding tray into the pigeon's rat proof cage. This is a long story to tell you that it DID keep out the squirrels who were also getting into the feed. Maybe they have more sensitive tastes. I'm not sure how it would work in the vegetable garden since it would be pretty much washed away when the area is watered. You might give it a try and tell us. I did find that putting lava rocks in pots will definitely keep the squirrels from digging in them to bury pecans and acorns. Some people have recommended feeding the squirrels to keep them out of the garden. Sorry I can't help you more.
