Anyone else growing almond trees?

My wife started three almond trees from seed 4 years ago, and this is the first year they've set fruit. They all look exactly like peach trees, two had pale pink flowers, one had large dark pink flowers.

Two trees have green fuzzy fruit like peaches, and the one that had darker flowers has red smooth fruit, like a nectarine. I google-imaged "almond tree fruit" and found pictures of both kinds, plus a third where the green fruit was fluted on the sides.

It's interesting that almost all US almond production is in central California, since the trees grow zones 5-9 or 7-9 (depending on who you believe). The UCDavis literature says the trees are tender but mine have been down below 20 degrees without damage. UCDavis says they bloom in December, ripen in July but mine bloomed with the peaches in late March this year. I'm wondering if they will ripen with the peaches, or have to stay on the trees until Fall before the shucks split?

Any thoughts or insights would be appreciated.
