So far, the only one I've done from seed for me personally is a Ficus religiosa. I've tried other seeds, but for one reason or another (bad seeds, wrong time of year, slow/erratic germinators, let the medium dry out too much, etc.), none of them have worked well enough that I've gotten an actual houseplant out of them. I'm not sure how to answer the question about whether I'm more proud of it because I grew it from seed than I am of my other plants. Probably not, because it's still pretty young and small: I have more personal investment in certain other plants I've had longer.

I'm always trying to grow seeds of various types, including produce from the grocery store. I have a six inch fig tree from a fresh fig I bought, and a passion vine from a passionfruit, which is really starting to grow well. I have some desert rose from seeds which I have managed to keep alive for several months. Cacti I have had no success growing from seed, as sooner or later they keel over from damping off. I grow cacti from cuttings with much better results. Whether from cuttings or seeds, I do feel a sense of pride if the new plant thrives.

I like to grow palms from seed mainly because the plants are so expensive paticularly, the very tropical understory types. Many have such unusual germination methods not to mention how slow this process can be. But every stage is fascinating .Coconut in particular as the first sprout is bigger than many full grown plants lol.
Seeds are definitely for the patient ,pay attention to detail type grower for sure lol
Another problem when you finally become successful . What do you do with 30 royal palms when your lot is 35x75?? or 50 queens ??? You experiment with dwarfing of course!!

Carlie, we grow attached to plants started from seed, they have more meaning...I feel the same about baby cuttings.

I have two heated trays filled with various seeds, some sprouted, others can take as long as a year to germinate, especially a fan Palm.

Those in the trays are: Adeniums, Speckled Geranium, Decaryi, Pachypodium, Dorstenias, Velvet Musa Banana and a friend sent Bird of Paradise seeds. Don't know if Birds will make it; they tend to rot.
2 Avocados, and Mango,..no luck with the mango. Can't figure how to remove outer shell from inner seed.

My Clivia was started from seed in 1982/3. Also a Pachypodium (Madagascar Palm Cactus) started in 2006.
2 Avo from pits, both about 12" tall.

In the past I sowed store-bought lemons..they grew tall and compact, but thorny. Gave the lemon to a friend.
A variegated, trailing African Violet lived a few years, then died..
Ficus Religiosa and Passionvine..Both plants were placed in our green house..the heater went out on the coldest night of winter..both froze. The passionvine was 13+ yrs, Ficus 5 yrs. boohoo.

I'd really like the mango to sprout..Anyone have any ideas how to remove shell? The seed is in water, but the water, which is changed daily, is funky. What to do?

Erict, no, you're not a nut..growing plants is a wonderful hobby. Relaxing. When a seed germinates, a cutting roots, or a plant flowers, we feel good.

Years ago, a friend gave me a plant book called 'Starting from Scratch.'
The author lists all types of edibles, how to, well, start from scratch.
Some seeds, like citrus, (depending on time of year) need to be refrigerated 1-3 months before sowing.
One day I'm going to try apple seeds. I think they need to be chilled first, but make pretty plants.

For mango seeds, I take a take a sharp knife and make a split in the seed shell, then with my fingers pry open the shell to get the seed out. But I only got a seed to germinate once, before the plant died a few month later.

Always wanted to grow papaya from seed but have trouble with germination. Any ideas?
