When to plant growing raspberry?

I purchased an already growing set of 3 rasp. canes, potted up and leafed out to soem degree. Its in a cool basement, where it gets some sun during the day, biut it stays cool enough to jeep it in check.

I know i should be pplanting rasberry canes now, that are dormant, but mine has some leaves. There is a house very near me who has some planted, but im unsure of the type he has ( mine is "heritage"), and his arent leafed out, but the buds on them are massive.

My last frost date is June 1st ( its is HIGHLY varied, and is usualy before this). The hardest frost weve had in weeks was last night at -5C, and only 5 days out of 3 weeks that have had any frost at all ( lows were -1C or -2C at that time), while most have been about 3-5C. According to the forcest, we arent going to see any frost in the next to weeks ( if we do it will be very light apperantly, and im aware you have to take the forcast past 3 or 5 days with a grain of salt).

What would you reccomend?

Here in Madison, Wisconsin, our raspberries are beginning to leaf out. This is despite a cool and overcast spring. My experience has been that raspberries are pretty hardy with regard to frost, they will withstand a light frost with little or no damage. Two days of freezing weather would be something else-I would not expect the raspberry leaves to survive. You might be able to cover your raspberry transplants with a 5 gallon plastic bucket, in the event of a hard frost. That would likely give good protection, even if you had to prune back the canes a bit to make the bucket fit.

Thanks for the response.

You arent TOO far from me ( 10 hour drive mabey, or less). The rasp. cant be to far. We got lots fo rain the other day and 3 days of nice warm sunny days. Im hopin tomorrow to see if the buds burst on the bushes close to me. IF they did, its fair game i think!

It isn't that simple. There are distinct differences in how one prunes a black raspberry plant to a red raspberry and also differences in how one prunes a red raspberry related to whether it's a summer bearing or an everbearing, and how and when you want fruit. Raspberries will do Ok with a few hours of mid-day sun. More sun would be better, of course. You do not need more than one raspberry bush for fruit. I don't hink you'll need netting for the raspberries. You will lose some fruit, but there should be plenty left, especially once the raspberry patch gets large. Raspberries spread pretty quickly. I've grow some blueberries with partial sun and they have done great. You might need netting for blueberries. I would move both bushes outside to let them get accustomed to outdoor temps and sunlight. After a week or two, during which you should protect them from frosty nights, you can plant outdoors. In general I wouldn't bring shrubs indoors - you're likely to get rapid but weak growth due to heat and poor light. Better to keep them outdoors where they may grow more slowly in the spring, but will produce growth better suited for life outdoors.

smonky: The best time to plant was about six weeks ago. The widest selection of raspberry plants would be found at mailorder/online nurseries like Nourse Farms in Massachusetts, but they ship bareroot plants, and I think their shipping season may be over. You could check. You may still be able to find potted plants at a local nursery or bigbox store. Some people prefer red raspberries, others like black. They have different flavors, and somewhat different growth habits. Study the nursery lists you can easily find online to understand the differences. The best type of red raspberry for your area would probably be classifed as an "everbearer", which bears in late summer and early fall on canes that grow up the same season (primocanes). I had heard that not much would grow under walnut trees unless it was in a pot, hmmm. I will have to remember that raspberries are a posibility next time this comes up. I agree with BBOy that cross bow would be drastic. The thing with blackberries is to cut the canes and when you can remove the roots. like all plants they must have sun on the plant to get nourishment through Photosynthisis to survive. I cut them down to about 5-7 inches, just enough so you can see which is which, and then dig the roots as I can. You will be suprised how quickly perserverance will show results. I am very biassed on this, but if you use a chemical, no matter what they say on the lable, its there, and you are going to eat something that comes from that area. not just you, but the birds, and everything else that creeps and flys. you will still have to cut and dig even if you use the poison, so why not just cut and dig in the first place. I have had this happen, as my neighbor on the back fence is a wierdo and doesnt prune his blackberry grove, which affects FIVE neighboring lots. most of us have been successfull with non chemical intervention. Just dont let them get long and tip root, and you should be ok. good luck, and dont be discouraged

I'd plant and be prepared to cover them if it freezes until other raspberries nearby have put out their leaves. If the plants nearby have leaves, then go for planting and don't worry about it. Since they have been inside, you might want to put them outside for a few days to acclimate to the cooler temperatures, and give them partial day sun so they won't get fried when you do put them in the ground.

Thats good advice. I know they need to be planted fairly early in the year, even when leafed out.

Im definetly going to let it acclimitize. The basement is pretty cool, and it does get decent sunlight. Hopefully its half acclimatized now!
