self fertile apricot for NYC or other choice?

Since i lost my lapins cherry, i have room for one more tree. would a self fertile apricot (if there is one) fruit well in NYC? It will be kept in a container and can be moved into my garage if necessary. If not an apricot would a plum work? should i replace the cherry? My other cherry looks like half the tree survived. Looking for something "easier" that will fruit so the kids can pick (i already have rasps, blackberries, strawbs, blueberries, a black gold cherry, and a fig)

Tomcot would likely be your best bet for an apricot. It's listed as partially self fertile. I think that's the case for quite a few apricots.

Have you considered one of those new bush cherries out of Canada? I haven't fruited mine yet but it would seem great for a pot and hardy to -40F. There are 6 varieties I've seen that vary in sugar and tartness. Mine is Carmine Jewel, best for pies.

The other varieties I've read about are Cupid, Romeo, Crimson Passion, Juliet, and Valentine.

Don't get me wrong . . when I used the term Frankenfuit - I was just funning with you. Combined grafts can be either great or not so great depending entirely on the varieties put together. The combination you mentioned just seemed odd because traditionally the two trees would grow a bit differently, and they have different tolerances and sensitivities to certain pests and diseases in our local growing environment. Here are some observations to consider: The Blenheim apricot pictured earlier is only in it's second fruiting season, and is already 16'tall regardless of prunings for bearing strength and shape. It produced a crop of 2 dozen fruit the first season, and over 350 this season. On the other hand, the nectaplum, peaches, and plumbs planted at the same time are all about 20-30% smaller trees. They also maintain their blooms longer, are slower to mature their fruit, and have smaller fruit loads than the apricot. They look quite different too. The apricot seems immune to nearly everything that the plumbs and peaches have suffered from - like powdery mildew. This long cool spring/summer has been challenging for them. The Blenheim couldn't care less. If you love the idea of a combo fruit, I say go for it, and keep in mind there are good and bad combinations for many reasons besides the examples of growth habit, fruit weight, and pest/disease resistance given. You might also consider combining in a different way. For instance, if an apple or guava variety requires a pollinating mate, but space is limited, you can place the two trees in the same planting hole to grow together. This scheme works well with other species too. I have cherries growing this way, and the combination is compact, beautiful, and easy to maintain. Some species do not like combined rooting though, so you will need to keep this in mind. I hope this adds a few more ideas to your toolkit.

matt: There is no universal pollinator for apricot, cherry, and plum. Getting a shrub isn't necessary. Many of us are growing those stone fruit on a 6ft by 8ft spacing or smaller. Some of mine are 2ft by 8ft. So get other varieties with good fruit and learn how to grow them as a small tree mainly by summer pruning.

I love my Harcot apricot. Really showed some resistance to canker and blossom rot. It has produced fruits for me in the wettest (most number of rainy days) bloom period ever. The fruits are the most delicious of the apricots I have tasted, it is like a hybrid between a yellow nectarine and a peach. It was developed at Harrow Experiment Station in Ontario, Canada. One thing nice is that it is cold hardy and also bore three flushes of blooms for me, and are spaced between 1 to 2 weeks apart. Some flowers will succumb to late frosts, but at least one major flush usually escapes it, just my observations that needed confirmation in our area. It currently has 18 different kinds of apricots, a peach plum, peach cot, almonds, plum cots, peaches, nectarines, asian plums, european plums, cherry plums grafted to it, and all growing with most blooming now, but I made sure half the canopy is still Harcot, it is just so good. Please note that the plums are not directly grafted, I have to use plumcots as interstems. Hopefully, next season if another interstem will take, I would have some sweet cherries grafted on it. I agree that the leaves and the tree structure is so good. The branches are spreading well enough so that whatever you graft unto it will usually not shade each other out. The Harcot being more disease resistant than the Blenheims or Canadian White Blenheim, is very ideal for multi-grafts. I would compare it to my Lisbon lemon tree in the way it spreads its major branches. I have grafted more than 50 cultivars to my Lisbon and I think I will be able to graft much more cultivars on the Harcot.

I don't know about them but will look into it. Sweetness would be high on my list for the cherries as i am not into making pies.

When I lived in CA it was assumed apricots were entirely self fertile and I had a tree that was, but when I tried growing them in the NE I noticed that at sites with two varieties, cropping seemed much more consistent. There was no info in the literature that suggested they performed differently here at that time but now they are considered only partially self fertile here.

You should consider a peach if you only have room for one tree. Order a Desiree from Adam's right now for delivery in fall or next spring and I think you might get fruit from it in about 3 years without spray where you are. Unless the squirrels take it.

I have the usual: Blueberries, strawberries, raspberries a few figs, a doughnut peach and an Asian plum, that may or may not hold onto its fruit this year.

I don't bother with apples although I'd like to get a pear in the fall or spring. Someone brought some Pluots and Apriums into the restaurant the other day. man were those a treat. No idea on the variety, they came from her families orchard in central CA.

thanks for the recomendations. i will look into the peach and the bush cherry. Is one of hte bush cherries (that is easily available) known for being sweeter than the others?

i have what they call Flatbush white and Flatbush dark. They are very local variety that does very well here in Brooklyn. I also have a chicago hardy and another unnamed white.

i will look into those. If you are pruning at all, i would love some cuttings, especially the hardy chicago (you can email me through my page, i think it is enabled). I have an atreano that was planted about a month ago. This morning all the figlets were on the ground. not sure if storms, squirrels, or birds. guess i need to net it once the main crop comes in.

Hello! I too have heard the call of apricots so I got a Stark Sweetheart on 2012. It grew great, pushing out 7 feet of growth last year (I didn't summer prune). In early April, I cut it back by half and unwittingly cut off all the blooms. They did look good in a vase for a week. The tree began to push, and now look at it. What happened? P.S. It's been cold and rainy.
