Haitihelper, I have some hard questions for you. 1. Are you sending these seeds to rural people? Seed saving is one of the most basic of all farming skills. Do they not have a supply of seeds of those varieties which grow best there? 2. Do they know how to grow the seeds? 3. Do they have land and water and fertilizer? 4. Do they have fuel to cook their food? My understanding is that the island is nearly stripped of trees and brush for firewood. 5. Haiti is in the process of environmental collapse, but still has one of the highest birth rates on Earth (35 per 1000 per year). Will seeds help in a hopelessly overpopulated nation? If you think I am picking on the people of Haiti, let me add this: there are many nations on Earth that have completely unsustainable lifestyles, and the USA is one of the worst. But Haiti is further along the road to ruin than most, because their natural resources are exhausted. So the questions I am asking are purely scientific. If seeds are not the limiting factor in food production, then a large quantity of donated seeds will not help. You have been there. Can you enlighten us?

There was someone that posted on the seed exchange named Brenda Cooper that makes regular trips to Haiti with her husband Michael. She requested seeds for Haiti under the user name Haitihelper (about a year ago I think) but her post was removed I assume because she didn't offer anything in exchange. I did a google search of her name because I wondered if she might have been in Haiti during the earthquake. Apparently she wasn't because I came across a news article telling about a planned trip in a couple weeks to help with medical needs. Hi! I have alot of dill seeds (25 or 50), also have Broccoli rabe, 10 garlic chive seeds, 24 sweet red cherry pepper seeds, celantro slow bolt 24 seeds. Also have roma, homestead, and red cherry tomatos. Thanks for that link, Anney, very interesting. Some of those could be useful for growing in summer in the subtropical US. Echo is a remarkable site, isn't it? I hope to finally get over and check them out this winter. From that info I extrapolate that many of our common vegetable types and/or temperate-adapted cultivars thereof would not be a good fit for Haiti and other low-to-mid-elevation tropical regions. Merely the mailing address to ECHO and some stamps might be a lot more useful for a Haitian, as I believe they give seeds free to people in such situations.
