Try again or forget vegies in the drought?

Have had several years of failed home garden vegies as I simply haven't been able to keep up the watering what with restrictions and other life interruptions. Apart from broad beans and silver beet, it seems nothing else is hardy enough. Tomatoes, asparagus, carrots, strawberries all get so far then wilt and die. I've tried pots rather than ground planting with no appreciable difference. Is there a way or do you think it's unrealistic and that if I haven't managed so far I should try something else apart from vegies?

Any advice about not just keeping things alive but flourishing would be appreciated
