Seedless can reproduce.........Last yr unable to control myself @ the market, I bought a seedless melon (I know, I know, I was just desprate (sp?) for a 'taste' of summer, too much rain, long wet baseball season....Took it home, that night after dinner we cut into it, ugh, not good, tastless..... The rest of the story is my DD had 3 weiners she had gotten for fair (one for market hog and the other two for us). They were still small and we had them in a temp pen in the horse pasture close to the house. I took the tastless melon out to them (after dividing it up, they didn't share well) They loved it....They soon grew enough that we put the in the 'real' pen on the other side of the ditch......... Fast froward to the middle of July, my DH was out changin' pipe and hollers 'We've got melons!' Where the pen had been there were three watermelon plants.....We decided that if they survived w/out any special treatment we'd just keep goin' on w/ that approach.........Ultimately we got five melons weighin' anywhere fron 3-6#s.......And MAN were they GOOD lol.............

Carole: My greenhouse is 34 by 52 ft by 16ft tall. It is steel frame covered with double poly, and heated with natural gas. It costs about $30 to $40 per month ave for heating and cooling. I heat only enough to keep it a few degrees above freezing. Only the sun heats it warmer than that. But for grapes one won't need such an elaborate setup. You just need to be concerned about rain; for disease control and fruit splitting; birds, and spring freezes. A shelter covered with single layer poly would probably be all you would need in your climate. That is assuming you don't have a problem with late spring freezes on grapes. The sides would be open but covered with bird netting. I'm not certain this would work in a humid climate like yours, at least not for the California cultivars like Crimson Seedless, Melissa, Autumn Royal, and Summer Royal, my favorites. But it would work for varieties like Jupiter, Glenora, and Reliance. Ohh. A greenhouse would be nice! Hmm maybe I'll ask in the organic section. The majority of my grapes are turning out fine so far, and maybe next time if I don't bag them until they are ripening they will be fine. The mildew seems like it will just wash off and the majority of grapes aren't severely affected (yet......). But it is rather gross-- a lot of it is on the stems. The actual grapes seem fairly spared. I'm sure it gets really hot in Texas? I read mildew stops growing if it stays above 90 (or was it 85) for over 12 hours. Maybe that's why. I'm on the coast only about 1 mile from the ocean, it stays in prime mildew temperatures all day. Netting and cloth is very difficult with the grape Vines growing out of control. Anyways I'm rambling on. Next year ill have a better plan! It's a lot to learn. :D this is the first real season this vine has produced much-- it's its third year.

The summer ripening among these hold about a month. Then the taste usually starts going bad. Crimson seedless holds just as well on the vine in the greenhouse as in the frig. The greenhouse after Nov 1 is pretty cool as that is chill cycle. I just ate a few more Jupiter. They'd be better to me if I spit out the skins. The skin is pretty nasty. Don't know if I'll even keep this one. Summer Muscat has vastly superior flavor for my taste and they appear to ripen about the same time. Another thing about Jupiter is it leafed out and bloomed well before the others. That would be way too soon outside here. Muscat of Alexandria leafed out well after all the others, at least a month after Jupiter. It would be a good candidate for an outside grape. Those berries are just swelling and starting to color. I hope it tastes as good as Summer Muscat but it is seeded.
