Those are wonderful. The mama reminds me of my aunt so I had to grin when I saw it. The bowl on the right looks interesting too. Wish we could also see more of it.

Cindy, your carvings are great. What mix do you use, and are they hollow? Are you the tufaneer that uses the dentistry tools? I would like to try the huge sculptures that I have seen, but I'm not sure what mix to use?

I am glad you all like their new baby. I haven't named her, but Margarit could be very fitting.All the carvings are solid. I usually use a 1 part portland to three parts of something else. If I want it to be a rougher look I will throw in a part of fine vermiculite or peat. If I want it to be smoother then all three parts will be masonary sand. I just got some silica sand so can't wait to play with it.I usually line a large trash can or pail with a plastic garbage bag, then around 8-10
hours later unmold it on a large turntable. Here is a pic of the whole family together

I start with wood chisels to get the rough shape, and then for detail use dental tools, and small wood carving tools. Usually there is a small window of 3-4 hours to carve this easily. I think wet and cover it up in wet towels for a week or so before doing much else with it. I live in a fairly frost free zone so don't bother with admixes too much, but do use latex paint

I have made a couple of other items also I thought the family needed some spice in their lives so I created a temptress who lays about close by. I want to fix up her paint a bit I think, tried to get a verdi finish but didn't quite make it. Maybe she is the reason Mama's eyes are so buggy .

I have a couple of other projects I am in the process of painting, so when done will post.
I took sculpture classees this winter, my teacher does classical erotic art. He wanted to try playing in cement for a difference so he came over one day and created. He made a torso which ended up being a little smaller than he wanted as he had a few bits crumble. It was pretty interesting watching him as he used his gloved hands much more than tools once he got the rough shape done. I think he got a fairly smooth texture. I am hoping no one will be offended by these pics, hope you enjoy

Would the pot head be the uncle, on the father's side? He reminds of a barber shop singer; he could be holding a note. Baby looks pretty content.

Glad you like the creations. Sean, I think there is a family resemblance between papa, and the pot head for sure.The colorful birdbath is a terra cotta saucer I mosaiced. I have made cement ones and mosaiced them as well. I am still thinking of adding a pet , or brother for the family.

Nice work and what a beautiful place to be inspired.
You mention that you don't use admixes but you do use latex paint, could you clarify that, do you put the paint in the mix (as an admix) or are you using it on the outside of the piece.

Morning Dena, I am able to go to a close by recycling place and get latex paint for free. I use it in the mix (as an admix), but have made lot's of projects with out if I don't have any.I managed to stockpile around 20 small cans over the winter so should be good for a while. I do also use it painting the outside of some items also.If it is a bit larger then I will just use good old house hold latex. Of course with free paint some of the colors are a bit unusual, but some are great.
