Best way to acclimate indoor plants to full sun?
Comments (4)I have seen plants become scorched outdoors in April, heat is not necessary. This (and some other reasons) has lead me to believe that there are two forms of scorch; one caused by heat and one caused by ultraviolet radiation. The risk depends much on where you live and what plants you have, some can be brought outside almost immediately, others may require a month before they have acclimatised. I would start on the safe side at 30-60 minutes exposure time, several hours can be way too much depending on the plants and how they are placed. You will figure out later what is most suitable for you. Note: the protection that develops does not spread to unexposed areas on the plant. So you need to either continuously turn the plant or make sure it remains at the same angle towards the sun at all time....See MoreWhich is the best way stat Impations Inside or outside?
Comments (2)Hi Winston, I've found it much easier to start Impatiens right where you want them to grow. Especially this late in the season. In fact here in z7 NC, it's quicker to start them in ground or planter, rather than starting them inside and transplanting them. Just pre-soak the dirt you're planting in, sprinkle the seeds on, and slightly rewater. Then keep them from completely drying out for 1-2 weeks and you're all set. A shady area works best of course. I find Impatiens seeds the easiest of all to germinate. I save my seeds from year to year - haven't bought new plants in over 10 years. Just pop the seed pod when ready, put them on a newspaper or something, and scrape out the seeds in a day when the pods are wilted a bit. Save them in a ziploc (just the seeds - no pods or they'll all mold) till next year. I usually get plenty of volunteers from year to year as well. Hope this helps! Comments (16)I like the Roman shade idea as well, but agree with the previous comments that the fabric of the sheers will be too flimsy to use for that purpose. If you go that route, You'll need to look for a fabric with the right weight that will hang well and fold properly. Experienced and knowledgeable personnel at a fabric store should be able to make some recommendations for you. As for short rods vs. complete rods for hanging panels, I've seen examples of both that I've liked and some that haven't always worked. I agree with qam999 that hanging a complete bay window rod closer to the ceiling raises the eye level and often makes the room feel bigger and the window seem grander, if that's what you're needing for this space. It's hard to judge without seeing the whole room, but your goal should be to create a sense of balance with what is happening elsewhere in the room. I've occasionally asked my long-suffering husband to stand on a small step-ladder and hold up panels at different heights while I stand back to figure out the best height at which to hang them (poor guy)! I can then look at them from different vantage points in the room to find the right height to create that design balance. I often use the extra-long panels and I hang them higher, because I tend to like the sense of a taller ceiling, but you need to find the right feel for you. If the curtains are lightweight, you may be able to tack them up on the wall with some painter's tape to allow you to step back, but it helps to have that perspective to make an accurate judgement. I'd love to see pictures of the end result when you're done!...See MoreBest way to hang these sheers
Comments (62)Nidnay, my installer will screw a screw into the back of rods to use as a stop (same as CDR suggested). I have used double sided sticky tape so the sheers stick to it. I’ve used needle and thread to stitch the rod pocket tighter at the opening so they stay in place. I also have a small tag gun and will tag the beginning opening of the rod pocket to make it tighter. I’m sure you’ll be able to come up with something to do the trick. Try to get equal spacing on each panel at the top on the rod. Your sheers can be trained into nice folds like the photos that were posted. Take your hand at the bottom of each panel and fan fold the sheer about 5” per fold. Once you get across the bottom have a piece of fabric or cord and tie it around the bottom of the sheers. You need to form those folds up to the middle of the sheers and band them in the middle. If you have a hand iron that has vertical steam, you can steam the sheers while fan folded to help them train. Leave them banded for a few days and see how they look. Having a weighted hem in sheers is a plus because it helps them hold their folds, but that is a custom feature! Training them takes time but usually works....See Moremeyermike_1micha
