Weird little black things on my squash leaves...?

jayco

I've been examining all my squash plants (winter & zukes) very closely this summer as last year I was caught off-guard by squash bugs. So far I seem to be succeeding with the sb's, but today I saw a new strange thing on my plants' leaves: little black flat seed-like things clinging to the leaves, often with a wispy bit of white attached. I am wondering what the heck this is and could it be something evil?

Also, there are a lot of ants on and near the plants. I used to think ants were harmless but now I know they're often feeding on other bugs that are bad, so should I be worried about the ants? If so, what could they be doing?

So many mysteries... any help is appreciated!
