Help with Dief Marianne

I have a Marianne dieff and have a question. I bought it about 2 months ago and it's quite full and large but the stalk is starting to lean. Does anyone know why it would lean. It doesn't at all seem top heavy. I can't really use string to hold it upright as the leaves go all the way to the soil line. Any ideas on how to hold it upright?

Maybe it's leaning towards a light source?

I didn't think about that. It's not in direct sunlight, is that appropriate? It is however leaning more towards the window and I've moved it to 1 of 3 places I've been testing out. All 3 locations are in the same room but not with the same amount of indirect light. Right now it's in the location with the least amount of indirect light. Should I move it to a better location?

Paul! You always sound sad when I come across your thoughts (the end of your blog, some of your thoughts here). You have given wonderful gifts to humanity that will extend well beyond your lifetime. Vocation and career/financial compensation do not always coincide (nor are they meant to), and vocations also have seasons; it's okay to rest. I am a 35-year-old who has recently become possessed by growing roses, specifically the old fragrant ones, especially cream colors. I will help carry the torch until the flames of popularity are fanned again. I have an inkling the young ones ("crystal children") just coming of age who love the old clothes and hairstyles will bring about a rose renaissance in their 40s, but that's just my guess. (I had NO IDEA the English and old garden roses I was in love with all over Pinterest for my wedding could actually be grown in my garden, for instance.) Take heart! All is not lost.

Make sure you pick a site with plenty of room for Marianne. It gets huge (definitely more at the 8' plus size than the 5' size in my yard.) I'm going to be digging mine out after it blooms because it is just too big and I don't like the way the bush looks. At least it's not thorny. The blossoms are some of the most beautiful of any of my roses, but I don't like the plant--reminds me more of an Austin than a gallica--glossy leaves and somewhat of an octopus. It's a matter of personal taste--for a Barden gallica, I like Ellen Tofflemire MUCH better. It took a couple of years for Marianne to get started--died back by about 1/2 the first couple of years, but now it's really healthy. It's going to get stuck back against a fence in the corner where I can enjoy the blooms but not have to look at it the rest of the year. Here's Marianne in bloom--it IS gorgeous then:

My idea of what your rose may be is sheer speculation, but 'Mousseline' is the variety that came immediately to mind when I saw your photo. I hesitated to suggest that identity on my earlier post because HMF does not list Rogue Valley as a supplier of 'Mousseline'. Later, when perusing the RVR site, I found that that nursery does sell 'Alfred de Dalmas' and indicates that 'Mousseline' is an alternate name. The two are actually distinct (altho very similar) roses that have become confused in commerce. It's my hunch that the RVR plant is actually 'Mousseline', not AdD. Check the photos under both names at HMF. The photos of 'Mousseline' should be especially helpful -- excellent representations of mossing on the buds, color shading, mature hips, etc. Whatever it is, your mystery rose is lovely . . . it looks like it's drying up - better have a look at the roots. I never put new rooting canes in large pots: too difficult to judge what's going on. I always put them in transparent cut-off bottles or plastic tumblers (adding holes of course ;)). this way I can clearly see the root state of health. I only put several of them together in a larger standard 6" pot after they have good roots. perhaps, you can try doing that. I also do not use clay pots - only plastic and as small as I can get away with. But I grow everything on self-watering wicks: clay is not suitable for me.

Yes. If I'm not mistaken this variety has some variegation, which means it needs a bright spot but little direct light. Morning sun (an east exposure, maybe 2-3 hrs of it) would be good. Hope your plant perks up!

I used some streamer paper to kind of tie them together. I used streamer paper so that it wouldn't dig into the stalk and also because it became pretty strong if I layered it. Right now its' doing pretty good holding the plant together. Also, I turned the plant so that the other side can start getting some light.
