Bell Peppers - Blossom end rot?

Yellow bell peppers are rotting on the vine. Is this blossom end rot or some other deficiency or fungus?

if the b.e.r. does not go away by its self you can give them some liquid lime it would be available to your plants right away and that should end b.e.r. hope it helps you regards. les

Most (better than 8 out of 10) of those affected pepper on that link are not BER. victims. Yeah I guess you could say that since 8 out of 10 of the pics aren't even of peppers. But the pics that are of peppers was the point and they are pics of BER on peppers. Bacteria? Sure. That's how BER works - a damaged portion of the fruit is created by the mal-distribution of calcium in the fruit and bacteria invade the damaged area causing the discoloration and rot. That doesn't mean it isn't BER. Just as all varieties of tomatoes are subject to BER given the right conditions, so are all varieties of peppers. There is ample credible info available about BER. Unfortunately there is also a ton of highly INaccurate, anecdotal info about it available. One has to evaluate the credibility of the source of the info when it comes to understanding its symptoms, its causes, and its controls. The only reason I say the BER or sunscalded fruit isn't salvageable is that many find the taste affected, off, bitter, etc. if it tastes fine to you by all means use it. Dave

No, no, no. It isn't too late to fix the problem, it is just too late for those particular peppers. The plant will survive if you get it the calcium it needs. Remember, calcium is not a mobile nutrient. Leaves or fruit that are damaged from a lack of calcium can not be fixed but new growth will be fine. The absolutely easiest way to fix this is to start feeding your plant some Cal-Mag mixed in the water. Follow the directions and don't over do it. Next year, make sure egg shells are in the recipe for amending your soil. They will take time to break down into usable calcium to that won't help you this year.

BER and some sun scorch too. You don't indicate where you live or what your zone is but given the high heat in much of the country plants in containers are difficult to keep evenly watered right now so BER is common.

Thanks for the reply Dave, I'm in Michigan and yes the heat has been through the roof. So was this caused by uneven watering? I thought I read somewhere BER is caused by a calcium deficiency.

BER is caused by calcium deficiency in the fruit, but it is rarely actually caused by calcium deficiency in the soil. Usually there's something else wrong that is preventing the plant from uptaking everything it needs naturally.

Usually the biggest culprit here is root damage caused by overwatering.

As mentioned that is old school when applied it is applied to soil deficiency being the cause. Just isn't true.

The actual cause is a mal-distribution of calcium in the fruit and that is a watering issue. Either the top growth of the plant exceeds the plant's roots ability to take up sufficient water OR (most likely) inconsistent soil moisture is being provided.

In established plants once you stabilize the soil moisture level the BER goes away.
