How do I acclimate plants to sun with no shade?

Hello Everyone!!

It has been a while since I have needed help. Well here I go again..:-)

I have a lot of houseplants that I will be putting outdoors ASAP! Citrus, gardenias, and the like.

I already know that putting them right in sun is a no no. That gradually introducing them to sun is a yes yes. Well I cut down the only tree I had in my yard that gave me any shade. Now, all I have is full sun back there. And no room anywhere else to put my plants. So my delema is...How do I gradually acclimate them to sun when I have no shady spot or freckled sunlight??

Any ideas would be much appreciated!!

Start by giving them an hour of full sun for 2 days, then 2 hours for 3 days, then 4 hours for 3 days, then into full sun, but move them to the full sun location on a cloudy day if possible.

Using good judgment about the light intensity should allow you a little longer periods during overcast or if you are giving them early/late in the day exposure.

Are there houses on either side? Look at the shadows cast by those homes to give you a sense of the location and degree of shade. (Maybe your sense of direction is slightly skewed, or the house faces NE?) Also remember the sun will be lower in the sky in other seasons. We are nearing the solstice, so you are seeing the maximum amount of sunlight now. I think full sun is considered to be 6 hours or more of sun, so if your west side gets sun from 10am to 4pm, that's full sun, and west-facing sun can be hotter than east-facing morning sun. Most of the plants I mentioned aren't evergreen, and they weren't meant to be prescriptive in any event. You should check out what your local nurseries have available, see what you like, and research their eventual shapes in a shrub book or on the internet. I'd say deciduous shrubs would be nicest in this setting, but your taste may dictate otherwise. I will add my mite too to the question of whether your conditions "qualify" certain plants to grow in the situation you are working with. What you need to understand in order to evaluate plants for this area is why various plants need the amount of sun or shade that is recommended for them, and what will happen if they don't get it. To some extent trial and error is the only way to learn this, but you can also learn the horticulatural principles to improve your ability to guess which plants will succeed. For example, most shade plants are adapted to catching as much light as possible in a shady environment. This is why many of them have big leaves. And they tend to prioritize surface area over leaf thickness, as they aren't faced with dessicating sun. So when you put shade plants in too much sun, the leaves are prone to burning and scorching, and they tend to wilt. Sun plants, on the other hand, have adaptations that allow them to resist heat, and they get leggy and don't bloom if they get too little sun. Obviously there are endless variations of leaf size and other attributes. For example, as someone mentioned above, there are hostas that actually want and need a certain amount of sun. And there are plants that are adapted to grow in the shade of deciduous trees, so they bloom in early spring when they get sun, and go through their leafy phase during summer. Some plants can also adapt to local conditions. For example, if the shade is really heavy and dense, as in the shade of a house, shade plants will grow their leaves extra big. But such a plant will be extra-sensitive if you change its conditions in mid-season or maybe if it gets a mid-day blast of sun. The conditions recommended on plant labels are only a guideline, and there are no guarantees that your conditions of partial shade are the kind of partial shade that a certain plant wants. KarinL

Beachplant and Barbara, thanks for the info. Knowledge overcomes effort. I guess some might not make it. That is ok, I just want to give them a fighting chance. I am not sure what type they are but their name is Hemerocallis fulva, believe from doing a little reading they are evergreen. The Hybrids are Hemerocallis. roadsde daylillies Hybrids At least I know who can take the sun. It is a killer if you get it wrong. I would not want to be out in it all day. Forsythia and Butterfly bush are so pretty, maybe they will make it. I live back from the water now about 2 1/2 miles. I just went on a buying spree with cheap prices. I have purchase from this wholesaler before and everthing is growing very well. The wind is doing a number on my plants. I hope they adapt. We had a freeze line come within 200 yards of my house. How weird is that. My house was ok but driving to work as I went downhill on my street about 200 yards. There was frost over entire acres of yards. It did not even nip a single plant. Thank you lord. I am getting ready to plant 50 lbs of Bahia Grass for the sheep. I ran irrigation last Sunday and will put sprinkler heads on this weekend. Poor fellers, they are upset I swiped a 100 x 100 area from them. They are pretty smart. They would graze certain areas at certain time of the day and select what they wanted. Kind of like a buffet. They were managing their food source. Another nice acre of Bahia will make them happy. Thanks for the info. I do need all the help I can get. Remember I just startd back into gardening last November. I have gone from no plants to who knows how many. The eater and all of my other exotic/invasive roses received a special place, tree and fence line to grow on. Hi vtsir. Scorched adenium leaves will first curl up around the edges and then lose their chlorophyll. They'll turn white before totally drying out. This doesn't appear to permanently harm them but it does mean they'll have to spend more energy replacing those leaves. The rule of thumb is to allow your plant to spend a week in increasing amounts of sunlight starting from bright shade to dappled sun then to morning sun and finally to full sun for as long as you can provide. I don't know what kind of climate you have where you are but up north, we wait until night temperatures are above 16C before bringing adeniums outside. If your plant spent winter in an indoor location where nights get no colder than, say, 10C, you can bring them outside then, when nights no longer dip below 10C. I hope this helps. Pagan

I use lawn chairs to create shady spots.
My little California buckeyes are still tender,
so I have them against the house where they get
a bit of morning sun and then afternoon shade.

You know what I was thinking of doing....Going to Lowes and buying a big roll of screen. Then tacking it up onto the top of my back porch then pulling it out about 5 feet from the house, then tacking up the other two corners to a couple of poles or something like that. Then they would get diffused sun. Does this sound like a good idea before I go out and spend my money?

Hi sissy..

I use a shade cloth. You can probably buy one at any local greenhouse supplier. I set it up as a canopy with poles or anything you can to tie the ends off to, like a tent, then stick your plants underneath it, until you think they are ready for full sun. They have different cloths that allow more or less sunlight, or freckled light to shine through. I got this idea from my local nursery since they have plants that they can not put in full sun when they are selling them. Some of their perenials and even alot of there indoor plants go underneath their shade cloths.

The shade clothe is a great idea..Also, is there room against your house/building so one side is blocked from the strongest light? Which direction does your yard face? In other words, if you placed your plants against house, garage, shed, etc, which direction would your plants face? What about neighboring homes? Are any close enough to block strong rays of light? The above posters came up with fantastic ideas..Hope u find the clothe..I take plants out during weeks they predict rain, and start in the PM, but even setting plants out on cloudy days can burn foliage..
